The folks at Sony have been desperately trying to make their way into the big boys club with regards to the super hero movie craze. All sorts of news and rumors have trickled down from on-high, talking about the endless stream of movies that the production company wants to make, each and every one of them a Spider-Man or Spider-Man spin-off flick. It was believed that Amazing Spider-Man 3 was going to be the next in line and that Sony would proceed into unknown territory from there. Now, it seems as if that may not be the case.
The first clue to this potential unraveling of scheduling is the fact that Roberto Orci – the man with the writing and producing skills – has said that he’s not officially involved with the third Spidey flick. The movie currently has a planned release date of summer 2016, so you’d think that Sony would be gearing up to go, at least in the capacity of organizing their producers and preparing their script. But if that’s the case, they’re keeping quiet about it.
Orci is a busy boy right now and his talents are being employed on the script for the new Star Trek flick, a movie that he is also going to be directing. So it may be that he just doesn’t have the time to work on Spider-Man right now. It’s also possible that Sony has, in light of the questionable critical reception of Amazing Spider-Man 2, decided to change up their tactics. We know that they have a Sinister Six and a Venom film in the works, so maybe they’re going to try releasing one of those movies first?
The only clue we have as to what’s really happening are the words of Orci, taken from an interview with IGN:
“I don’t know what their plans are for that franchise. I don’t ever want to say never, but we have to figure out what their scheduling is in terms of when they want each movie. I’ve read probably as much as anyone else. There’s a love for the Sinister Six, the idea of Venom — there’s an idea of Spider-Man’s going to be one of these characters that’s part of our business. He’s such a popular character. Spider-Man’s not going to go away any time soon. When it all happens and how and all that has yet to be determined.”
So there’s no doubt that Spider-Man and all his amazing friends (and enemies) will be sticking around. The big question is when they’ll be showing up and in what order. The summer of 2016 is shaping up to be a nightmare of competition, featuring such major acts as Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, the next X-flick, X-Men: Apocalypse and a third installment of the Captain America franchise. If Spider-Man can’t hold his own, Sony will get their butts stomped in that big-boy’s playground.
If things continue as planned, Sony should be releasing Amazing Spider-Man 3 come June 10th of 2016. And if those plans change, we’ll let you know.
