Season 4 of Game of Thrones introduced a fascinating new character in Oberyn Martell. The Prince of Dorne also had a second name: The Red Viper. A lascivious scoundrel on a quest for revenge, Prince Martell took on Ser Gregor Clegane, the most brutal man in the land of Westeros in an episode entitled “The Mountain and the Viper.” Some thought the story would end there, but House Martell stands to issue a second weapon next season: The Dornish Sand Snakes. Who and what are they? Where there’s one viper, others cannot be far behind, and we know who’s the first “Snake” to be cast.

24-year-old actress Keisha Castle-Hughes, noted for her childhood role in Whale Rider, has been cast in season 5 of Game of Thrones. She’s set to play one of the many illegitimate daughters of Oberyn Martell, known as the Sand Snakes. No word as yet on which role she’ll be playing but the last name is “Sand,” which makes her a bastard in Dorne, much as “Snow” denotes bastard offspring elsewhere. Noted among the daughters are Obara, Nymeria and Tyene, all of which vary in appearance. But if the book’s description is any clue, Castle-Hughes could play Nymeria, who is “…elegant, refined, and beautiful with dark eyes and silky black hair worn in a braid bound with copper wires.”

But that’s just me thinking out loud. She could be playing any one of the daughters. But according to the Huffington Post, they’re an incredible addition to the story:

“The Sand Snakes are AMAZING. Oberyn’s bastard daughters are known for having their father’s ferocity, though it manifests itself differently in each Sand Snake. The oldest four daughters were all mothered by different women, from whores to highborn ladies. The youngest four were all mothered by Oberyn’s current paramour, Ellaria. “

When zap2it reported a casting call in Spain a few weeks back, everybody predicted the show would feature Dorne in its new season as basically everybody we’ve seen coming out of Dorne could very well have been Spaniards. Dorne is, after all, a hot peninsula heavily populated by the Rhoynar, a people known for their “olive skin, black hair, and dark eyes.” The New Zealand-born Castle-Hughes definitely fits the description of one of Martell’s bastards and she might be able to kick some ass but I’ve never seen the actress fight. Other characters such as Oberyn’s brother Prince Doran, Doran’s son Trystane, and the Viper’s other daughters have yet to be cast, but we can expect the Martell clan to shape up and present some real problems to the Iron Throne.
