Universal’s first experience adapting a board game to the big screen was not great. Battleship was savaged by critics and ignored by audiences, and any hope of a franchise went, ahem, down with the ship. But hey, if at first you don’t succeed… Another board game based movie is on the way, but instead of going all action-packed, this one is reaching for the horror side of cinema. Of course, with a game like Ouija, which has a long, complicated history of occult connections, what other genre could you approach that game with other than horror? Comedy? The trailer just released certainly begs to differ.
The trailer was posted to the Facebook page for Pretty Little Liars with the promise that there would be more Ouija stuff coming through the show during the August 19 episode. So how is it? Well, you never can tell with trailers, but it does generate some fairly decent goosebumps. But you should see that for yourself…
Although it looks like Ouija is going to walk over well-worn horror tropes, you can’t say (or maybe you can) that they’re not effective. The sewing the mouth shut gag, and the seeing the ghosts through the game piece was pretty effective, at least for me, so it will be interesting to see if the movie can deliver something fun and original or just be purely derivative. I guess time will tell.
Plot Synopsis: In Ouija, a group of friends must confront their most terrifying fears when they awaken the dark powers of an ancient spirit board. Stiles White directs the supernatural thriller that is produced by Platinum Dunes partners Michael Bay, Andrew Form and Brad Fuller (The Purge, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Friday the 13th) alongside Blumhouse Productions’ Jason Blum (Paranormal Activity and Insidious series, The Purge), Bennett Schneir (Battleship) and Hasbro. Juliet Snowden and Stiles White wrote the script for Ouija, and Universal will distribute the film worldwide.
Ouija will be in theaters just in time for Halloween on October 24.
