We’ve been aware for some time that Terry Gilliam‘s bleak, yet brilliant time travel/apocalypse flick 12 Monkeys would be adapted into a TV series by the good people (?) at SyFy.
A few days ago, the new show’s co-executive producer Terry Matalas spoke at the SyFy TCA panel–he assured all present that his network’s iteration of 12 Monkeys will bear little resemblance to Gilliam’s 1995 film, it will be a “complete re-imagining” using the film as a framework, but not based on it.
If this is so, someone needs to tell the series’ new trailer.
We didn’t want to redo the movie and so we changed everything from the top down.
Said Matalas about SyFy’s 12 Monkeys.
If you’ll recall, 12 Monkeys was the story of a world decimated by a global pandemic, and the survivors attempt to send a convict back through time to stop the plague before it begins starring Bruce Willis, Madeline Stowe, and Brad Pitt.
Now here’s the trailer for SyFy’s version:
Aaron Sanford–best known as “Pyro” in the X-Men film franchise–and Amanda Schull take over for Willis and Stowe.
There doesn’t seem to be a new version of Brad Pitt’s character just yet, but other than that, it’s difficult to see what makes SyFy’s series all that distinct from Gilliam’s movie.
Then again, this is merely a trailer–not even a first episode:
It’s quite possible that the series will start out in familiar territory, and then branch out into something new and original–like Hannibal, and according to reports, Fargo have done.
In any case, 12 Monkeys was a good enough movie and interesting enough story that I’m willing to give the show a chance.
