GoT

Although season four just ended, people are already dying for season five of Game of Thrones. The hit HBO show has become must-see TV. In fact, I don’t think I know anyone who doesn’t watch the show. With good reason too! While GoT may have a weak storyline or character here or there, it’s always engrossing, always exciting and – more times than not – usually pretty upsetting.

Many don’t know what’s coming in the next season but we do know who will direct it. HBO has revealed the directors for season five and it’s a mix of newcomers and seasoned pros, but mostly newcomers. It’s a small group of guys (and only guys – more on that later…) but you have to remember the show only has ten episodes a season. But these five men will be getting quite a fill because they are all taking on double duty.

So who will be bringing the bloodshed and battles and boobs next season? Let’s have a look.

Here’s the list of directors for season five:

Michael Slovis (Breaking Bad)
Mark Mylod (Shameless, Entourage)
Jeremy Podeswa (Boardwalk Empire, The Tudors)
Miguel Sapochnik (House, Fringe)
David Nutter (Game of Thrones, notably ‘The Rains of Castamere’)

The scheduling is interesting here. Each director will take on two concurrent episodes. So Slovis will direct episode one and two while Mylod will direct three and four and so on and so forth. That’s probably a good money-saving device but could also lead to some cool flourishes and styles that lead from one episode to the next.

Sadly, the list doesn’t include any women, most notably Michelle MacLaren, who has not only directed some of the best episodes of Breaking Bad but has been involved with several episodes of GoT too. A show that focuses on women so much deserves a female director. Hell, even if it didn’t focus on women a lot it still deserves a female director. My hope is that MacLaren was offered a chance to get behind the camera again but couldn’t because her schedule is so packed. The woman is a fantastic director and deserves as much work as she can get.

So there you have it, those are the five men who will give us the next season of Thrones. Now, what will the season entail? Your guess is as good as mine. Although, if you’ve read all of the books then your guess is better than mine but, hey, keep the spoilers to yourself.

Game of Thrones will debut its fifth season in Spring 2015.
