Joss Whedon has been working his tail off. He helped James Gunn cast Thanos for Guardians of the Galaxy. He’s constantly hounded by the press and has somehow found time to tweet layouts for new Buffy The Vampire stories. On top of all that, he’s been uniquely committed to the Avengers from day one, having completely trashed Zak Penn’s initial Disney draft and started from square one. The man is a machine and geeks everywhere are giving him all the just due love he deserves and he keeps paying back in dividends. With all he’s got to do, you’d think he’d spend his free time hanging out by the pool sipping margaritas. Instead, he powered on and talked movies with Entertainment Weekly. The topics ranged from J.A.R.V.I.S. To Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch.

From what we know about Age of Ultron, Tony Stark lets his technology get out of hand and it becomes a little too self-aware. In contrast to the comic origin of the robot character, Ant-Man Hank Pym has nothing to do with its creation. But it morphs into a deadly force all the same and becomes a catalyst between the Avengers and the twins.

“They’re on Team Ultron, which makes things really hard for the Avengers because all of sudden they’re dealing with powers that they’re not used to…With the [first] Avengers, everybody pretty much had the power of being able to punch somebody, and now we have a woman who can get inside your head and move objects, and a boy that can move faster than anything, and a robot who can self-replicate and is out of his mind. So all of sudden, it’s a darker, weirder, tougher world that they’re living in.”

This description of Scarlet Witch denotes telepathy and telekinesis but doesn’t delve into the deeper aspects of the comic character’s supernatural power. Jury’s out on whether Whedon will even go there. Quicksilver, however, is faster than anything, and that’s perfect. Whedon goes on about their personalities.

“There’s a lot of clashing. He’s quick tempered. He gets agitated. He’s impatient. But he’s super protective…They’re very yin-and-yang in that twin sense. In his power, he’s physical and she’s psychological. My character is very much on the frontline, but he can be quite emotional. You see this beautiful tenderness between them.”

But what about the Vision?

“And I’m not going to tell you any more about The Vision.”

Fine, then we’ll just look at him!

vision

Vision is played by Paul Bettany, who also played the part of Stark’s inanimate sidekick J.A.R.V.I.S. No idea how much of a role he will play in the film, but in the comics he is created by crazy ass Ultron. Both guys are cool characters, but I’m really interested in how they plan on going with Vision and Scarlet Witch’s relationship, if they touch on it at all. SW apparently has no problems with dating androids and the last time we saw android sex, it was Tasha Yar and Data doing the wild thing on board the Enterprise. If anyone has evidence of this type of activity since, please contact me. For research purposes!

I’m glad to see fresh faces being introduced and, unlike The Amazing Spiderman 2 and Superman v Batman, it doesn’t feel like there’s too much going on here. Whedon has proven that he can juggle multiple characters and make it sensible, so I trust him to throw in a few more to make it interesting. And keep in mind, all of these Marvel movies seem to point at an insane showdown with Thanos for Avengers 3, so it looks to me like we’re gonna need a much bigger boat to take that shark on. How do you build a bigger boat? Make more movies and introduce new characters. I’ve said it before, Marvel know exactly what they’re doing. Think about if Ultron were good, with all his insane ambitions and power. Whedon is Marvel’s good guy Ultron.
