It looks like Hayley Atwell can reply on some familiar guidance behind the camera when she takes Peggy to the small screen in Agent Carter on ABC. It was announced today at the Marvel TV panel at San Diego Comic Con that amongst the directors lending their talent to the first season of the solo adventures of Steve Rogers’ Girl Friday are Joe Johnston (Captain America: The First Avenger) and Joe and Anthony Russo (Captain America: The Winter Soldier).
A packed crown in Ballroom 20 at SDCC first learned the news, which was then repeated through Deadline, that the big screen talent was being brought to the new Marvel series. The Russos will be directing episodes two and three of the show, and then Johnston will take over for episode four. Marvel Studios co-president Louis D’Esposito will be helming the first episode, following up on his work on the Marvel One-Shot Agent Carter, which was included on the Iron Man 3 Blu-ray, and I guess at this point can be considered the Agent Carter series pilot.
In other news, Jeph Loeb, the head of Marvel TV, said that filmming on Agent Carter has not yet begun, and that the writers room on the series will open next week.
Hiring Johnston and the Russos suggests a fairly different tact for Agent Carter as opposed to Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., which, aside from Joss Whedon working on the pilot, featured a rotating pool of directors-for-hire with no ties to previous Marvel work. Agent Carter is also a unique series because it will have a much shorter run of episodes, along with being a period drama, but perhaps it’s also an indication that there’s a lot of excitement about the possibilities of the project that it was able to lure directors of their caliber to work on the show.
Of course, both Johnston and the Russos have previous TV experience; the Russos directed numerous episodes of Arrested Development and Community, while Johnston made an episode of The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles.
As a reminder, here’s the synopsis for the show:
“Marvel’s Agent Carter,” starring Captain America’s Hayley Atwell follows the story of Peggy Carter. It’s 1946, and peace has dealt Peggy Carter a serious blow as she finds herself marginalized when the men return home from fighting abroad. Working for the covert SSR (Strategic Scientific Reserve), Peggy must balance doing administrative work and going on secret missions for Howard Stark all while trying to navigate life as a single woman in America, in the wake of losing the love of her life–Steve Rogers. Inspired by the feature films “Captain America: The First Avenger” and “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” along with the short “Marvel One-Shot: Agent Carter.” Starring Hayley Atwell as Agent Peggy Carter, “Marvel’s Agent Carter” is executive produced by Christopher Markus, Steve McFeely, Tara Butters, Michele Fazekas, Kevin Feige, Louis D’Esposito, Jeph Loeb.
Agent Carter will premiere at midseason on ABC.
