A young actress from one of the most critically-acclaimed TV shows starring in a film based on one of the most critically-acclaimed video games ever? Makes sense.

Hot off his announcement about a possible Evil Dead TV seriesSam Raimi dropped another bombshell on San Diego Comic-Con: he is producing a film adaptation of the insanely-loved video game The Last Of Us. The film was announced months ago but now Raimi is producing, adding a hefty dose of star-power. No director or cast has been announced but apparently the team (Raimi and writer/Naughty Dog creative director Neil Druckmann) have met with Maisie Williams, a.k.a. Arya Stark from Game of Thrones. We can hear fans rejoicing already.

Is this is a done deal? Who would Williams be playing?

Druckmann says Williams is wanted for the role of Ellie, the female protaganist of the game. Ellie is a young woman who treks across a post-apocalyptic America with Joel, an older man who will do whatever it takes to protect them both from zombie-like humanoids that roam the countryside. As many have pointed out, Ellie (picture below) looks a lot like actress Ellen Page but we doubt Druckmann and Raimi would approach her because she was apparently unhappy with the similarity.

This isn’t a done deal, even if producers and writers want Williams. The young lady is very busy with her major role on Game of Thrones and might not be able to fit a big blockbuster in. But it’s a good sign if the producers are publicly stating they want her for the part. The fact that they have actually met with her is even more encouraging, signaling interest on both sides. So this could happen but it’s not written in stone yet. Get excited…but don’t count all your chickens until the eggs start hatching.

If Williams does star, that would mean Raimi, Druckmann and their team would still have to find an actor to play Joel. That’s a major, meaty role and one that many would clamor for. Expect a very big name for that casting. Druckmann is currently working on the script and transforming a long, wide-ranging video game into a smaller, focused script. It’s a big undertaking but the man is giving himself a lot of time, stating that the movie is still a few years off. In other words: don’t expect a trailer anytime soon.

Coincidentally, The Last Of Us is about to make its debut on Playstation 4 (it was a Playstation 3 game) meaning that many (myself included) can finally dive into the game and see what all the praise is about.
