When the latest incarnation of Godzilla was announced, there was an understandable amount of trepidation concerning the project. After the last Godzilla movie, everyone expected yet another disaster of epic (and expensive) proportions. But the new Godzilla was met with mostly positive reactions and brought in a fair bit of cash. So naturally, Legendary Pictures is looking to capitalize on that and continue the franchise. Today at SDCC, Gareth Edwards announced that Godzilla 2 is indeed coming. What’s more, the movie will feature a plethora of the big lizard’s classic enemies. Read on for some serious name dropping.
According to Edwards, Godzilla 2 will be bringing Mothra, Ghidora and Rodan to the big screen. The folks at Legendary showed off some concept footage of the new critters. They also said that they have no idea when the new Godzilla flick will be coming to a theater near you. Edwards will be busy with the first Star Wars spin-off flick (a gig he’s not likely to give up) and until he’s ready to direct again, the movie will have to sit on the backburner.
So while we don’t know when to expect Godzilla 2, we do at least know that there will be some serious, giant rubber (CGI) monster smackdown going on. What’s more, it ain’t just gonna be “Godzilla vs. <insert monster here>”. It’s going to be a free-for-all battle royale between the most famous kaiju in history. Which is, after all, the very essence of what every Godzilla movie should be.
