Avengers Age of Ultron is hitting theaters in 2015 and Marvel Studios has revealed other planned release dates for years to come. Of the planned dates, we only know a few confirmed films, like Ant-Man on July 17, 2015; Captain America 3 on May 6, 2016; and Guardians of the Galaxy 2 on July 28, 2017.
Naturally, one of the announced dates will have to be Avengers 3, but the question is which one? At SDCC, Kevin Feige, when asked about the date announcements, went on to say that we should probably expect 3 years between Avengers movies.
The last one was just a scheduling thing, there were other studios that were moving their chess pieces around on their boards, which is why that had been in the works — why that other 2018 date came up a few days after the initial release. We haven’t really talked about when we’ll see Avengers 3. I assume we’d like to stick to three years between Avengers movies like we did [between Avengers and Age of Ultron].
Interestingly, in an interview with Yahoo UK James Gunn was asked about a possible Avengers/Guardians of the Galaxy crossover and hinted at such a crossover being a very real possibility, much to the delight of many fans. Chris Pratt, Vin Diesel, and other stars of the film also had some thoughts on the idea.
For those that don’t want to watch, here’s what Gunn said:
We talked about all sorts of possibilities [for a crossover] and I kind of know what the basic plan is. That could or could not include a couple of Avengers and a couple of Guardians meeting up, or all of the Avengers and all of the Guardians. But, we do inhabit the same universe and they’re pretty big personalities that are likely to, at some point or another, run into each other.
After we all get a chance to watch Guardians, we’ll surely have a better idea of how the two stories might fit together, but I have a feeling it’ll involve Thanos. With Thanos supposedly showing up in Avengers 3, maybe we’ll see some Guardians in that movie or shortly after? It only makes sense for Marvel to cash in on two hugely successful franchises as they head further and further into their cinematic universe, maybe bringing the cosmic and more Earth-oriented storylines to a nice meeting point.
The full slate of Marvel release dates are below, with the May 2018 date being likely for Avengers 3, but nothing definite. Maybe we’ll see that crossover somewhere in there too?
