Since the first ‘Avengers’ film came out, geeks like myself have been wondering about what would happen with comics founding member The Wasp. With a handful of wonderful actresses who could potentially deliver a great Janet Van Dyne, we thought maybe she’d come in for the second film, show up in someone else’s, etc. Eva Longeria could’ve done it; Morena Baccarin would’ve been an acceptable choice; Rashida Jones might’ve finally jumped out of my dreams and into some skin-tight black leather. Moreover, Ant-Man co-star Evangeline Lilly would’ve been a top notch choice for the role. But, when Michael Douglas dropped by Comic Con and gave a little back-story on the film’s depiction of Hank Pym, it seemed to kibosh the likelihood of seeing the Wasp in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Ever. (Possible SPOILERS)
Douglas spent SDCC14 in pure misery, dodging questions, sweating like crazy, dealing with nerds, and being shorter than I expected. By the time Entertainment Weekly got to him for an interview, he was probably willing to say anything to get the hell out of there. On spilling the background of his character, Hank Pym, Douglas also hinted at the possible downer fate of his wife, Janet – aka the Wasp, a woman who could shrink down, grow huge, fly, and shoot bio-electric beams from her hands.
“My name is Dr. Henry Pym. I’m an entomologist. I’m also a physicist and I discovered in 1963, a way, a serum to reduce a human being to the size of [an] ant maintaining the strength. Not only that, but I was able to find a way to communicate with the ants. But unfortunately during this process, a tragic personal accident happened with my wife, my daughter, [portrayed by] Evangeline [Lilly]. So I’ve had to pass my powers and strengths onto a mentor. Because my partner, my partner, Corey over there, f–ked me good.”
“Tragic accident” huh? Do we get that Janet died back in the 60’s? We’ll probably get to hear about her, but will we meet her at all? If she’s alive, will she do a Peggy Carter on the elderly tip? If she’s dead, will we see her in flashback? Will she be The Wasp in flashback, teamed up with H.P. at all? And if any of these questions are “yes,” who is playing this role? And why cast someone like Evangeline Lilly, who totally looks like she could play The Wasp in this film? Why was the Wasp cut out at all? I’ll tell you why…
Back when Hank had assumed the role of Yellow Jacket, he was a little out of his mind and practiced a few fighting moves on his wife from time to time. It was a bummer domestic abuse storyline that ranks up there with Green Lantern #54 when he found his g.f. stuffed dead in a fridge. Yeah, once upon a time, comics had this thing about female humiliation. Now they just draw them unnecessarily sexy.
I’ll miss not seeing Janet Van Dyne in the MCU but I get why they wouldn’t want to tackle her relationship with Pym. That really is a black spot on the wedding dress of a movie with comedic elements. Now, just because some old school writer was nostalgic for the days of James Bond slapping girls senseless, we have to do without our pretty little JVD. But I’ll bet the farm that we’ll see the Wasp somewhere down the line, just not THE Wasp.
As I said, Lilly could effortlessly put us in that mindscape and I bet she’ll somehow take up the mantle of her mom or get the torch passed down to her from big daddy. I just hope she embodies the spirit of the character: prissy, a “finer things” girl, shopaholic, yet practical problem-solver. Plus, I’d love to see that reverse power of growing to gigantic size on screen.
Here’s to Janet Van Dyne! In her honor, here’s my favorite Wasp cosplay by Riddle.
