Birdman is the latest movie from director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu (Babel, Biutiful) and if this newest trailer is to be believed, it may be one of the best superhero movies in a very long time. Quite a feat, considering there are no superheroes in the movie. Michael Keaton stars as Riggan Thomson, an actor who was best known for his role as the superhero “Birdman” during his younger years. Time has not been kind to Thomson as his younger alter-ego continues to follow him even though he has not worn the costume in many-a-year. After careful consideration, he decides to return to his roots as the iconic character by producing a Birdman Broadway play in which he will write, star and direct.
Everything in this trailer is perfectly timed to invoke a roller coaster of emotions in the viewer. From the sad, beaten voice over to the magnificent, awe inspiring effects, to the humor of Thomson running through Time Square in his skivvies and being asked for autographs, all to the tune of a cover of The Animals’ ‘Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood”, this trailer truly delivers.
Birdman (or The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) boasts a wonderful ensemble cast that includes Edward Norton, Emma Stone, and Zach Galifianakis, to name just a few, and each appear to be at the top of their game. The movie will grace the Venice, Telluride, and New York Film Festivals and it is sure to garner a large following as the critic reviews start pouring in. Given Inarritu’s history, there is a great chance that this may end up with a few Oscar nods and there are plenty of people who would love to see Keaton walk away with the coveted gold statue. While festival goers will get to see the movie before the rest of us, the film will receive a limited release on October 17, 2014. Chances are that this one will be screening at the local art houses instead of your local multiplex, so keep an eye out! If you are a fan of superheroes, or just a fan of great movies with brilliant performances, Birdman is one that you will not want to miss.
