Sure, this thing already leaked thanks to a “butt-cam photo,” but now you can enjoy Thanos in all his high-definition genocidal glory thanks to the first official image of the Josh Brolin-portrayed character in Guardians of the Galaxy. Thanos doesn’t do much in the film, but his presence looms large throughout as the gang from Marvel are clearly setting him up to be the biggest of all bads in some future film or films. But if The Avengers offered a mere sip of Thanos, Guardians allows us one big gulp, and only one thing’s for sure: this is a guy you don’t want to cross (even though everyone seems to keep crossing him).
BEHOLD! The Mad Titan!
Hm. Well, he does know how to fill up a space chair. And those rocket arm rests… Awesome touch.
If you haven’t seen the film yet, it is fairly early on that we see Thanos in the flesh. Ronan the Accuser and Nebula are summed by The Other (the six fingered dude who’s Loki’s main point of contact in The Avengers) to give Big Purple here an update about the whereabouts of the Orb, then currently in the possession of one Peter Quill (Chris Pratt).
Considering that we meet no less than four other antagonists in the film before we even get to Thanos, it was still really enjoyable to see the character in all his glory in Guardians. He had a very Emperor in The Empire Strikes Back vibe, a kind of “Hey kids, remember me because I’ll be back to haunt your nightmares later!” kind of feeling. Brolin’s voice was a good match for the character too, dark and commanding but not over the top. I wonder if he’ll mo-cap Thanos from this point on, or if he’ll just keep providing the voice? Either way, another awesome bit of casting by Marvel Studios.
When will we next see Thanos? Some say it will be next summer in Avengers: Age of Ultron, other say we may have to wait for Guardians of the Galaxy 2 in July 2017. Time will tell, and we’ll update you when it does.
