Dear Arrow season three. You rock! We haven’t seen a single frame of film yet with the exception of the Comic Con trailer from a couple of weekends ago, but to us, you’re already awesome! Please keep up the good work. Signed comic nerds everywhere.
Today’s love-letter to Arrow is brought to you by the letter “M,” “M” standing for Manhunter. The DC Comics villain is the latest established DC Universe character to appear on the CW series based on Green Arrow. Joining a roster of guest spots that already includes Black Canary, Huntress, China White, Deadshot, Amanda Waller, Nyssa al Ghul, and Bronze Tiger, Manhunter will take his place amongst his comic book brethren in the third episode of Arrow’s upcoming third season. But in what context will he appear, and who will be playing him? Read on…
For the record, Canadian actor David Cubitt will be playing Mark Shaw, AKA: Manhunter. Cubitt is perhaps best known to American audiences for his role as Detective Lee Scanlon for seven seasons on Medium. He also had roles in the series, The American Embassy, Robbery Homicide Division, and The Eleventh Hour as well as the movies K2, Alive and Ali.
But come on, what you really want to know is the context for Manhunter’s appearance, right? Well, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Shaw is “an A.R.G.U.S. operative in Corto Maltese who crosses paths with Diggle.” A.R.G.U.S., as I’m sure you know, is the organization run by Waller, which is also the banner under which the Suicide Squad is assembled.
That would be in keeping with the comic book origins of the Shaw iteration of Manhunter, who was a defense attorney who had seen so many criminals escape justice that he seeks out the ancient legion of crime-fighters called The Manhunters. No word on whether or not the Arrow writers will go futher than that, because in the comics it turns out the Manhunters are androids created by the Guardians of Oa before they were replaced by the Green Lantern Corp. Although Arrow has opened the door to super-powered people, space cops and robots may be pushing things for the moment.
Manhunter now joins a motley crew of DC characters appearing for the first time in Arrow season three including Katana (Devon Aoki), The Atom (Brandon Routh), Wildcat (J.R. Ramirez), a new Count Vertigo (Peter Stormare), and the yet-to-be-cast Ra’s al Ghul . Arrow season three premieres Wednesday October 8 on the CW, and Nerd Bastards will once again be recapping every episode once it begins. Stay tuned.
