Hello Nostalgia! Because someone, somewhere, might possibly want to see it, it seems like a third Conan movie starring Arnold Schwarzenegger may still come to fruition. A sudden update the other day reports that the script is almost complete, and with fingers crossed and hopes high, the film itself could begin shooting as early as next year. The only thing standing in the production’s way? Studio approval. But the producer thinks that this will become a reality, and he seems to be already stoking the hype machine to make it so.
According to TheArnoldFans, a Schwarzenneger fansite, producer Fredrik Malmberg told them that screenwriter Andrea Berloff (World Trade Center) is currently in the final stages of completing the script. “We want to polish up the script, specifically about the characters,” said Malmberg, “but we don’t think it will take long. We’ll probably have this turned in around September after the holiday and then we’ll take it to the studio and if they’re happy, we can hopefully start [production] in the Spring .”
The proposed film, which may or may not be based on a pitch by Fast & Furious franchise screenwriter Chris Morgan, will be a follow-up to the previous two Conan films starring Schwarzenegger – Conan the Barbarian and Conan the Destroyer – and will have nothing to do with the 2011 reboot of the franchise starring Jason Mamoa. That film cost $90 million to make, but ended up only earning half of that from the worldwide box office, making it both a commercial and critical flop. Schwarzenegger’s box office clout ain’t what it used to be either if you discount those Expendables films, but much like seeing the actor reprise his role in the new Terminator, Genesis, it’s believed there would be a lot of interest in seeing him reprise the lead in his second most favored franchise.
Malmberg, for his part, hopes that it will be Schwarzenegger’s follow-up project to Terminator: Genesis.
“That’s the intention,” he explained. “Arnold wants that. I would like that and I know everyone from the studio side would like that but it’s all in the script. We need to get the script where it’s right and ready to go. In the movie world, nowadays, when a movie is a go movie, it happen very quickly. It’s up to Universal to set the date for it to be released but personally, I don’t think it has to be a summer movie. I think there’s plenty of examples of big event movies being released in the winter like the Matrix movies and The Lord of the Rings. I can see this being a winter movie as well as a summer movie. This iconic role of Arnold as Conan is so big that it can be year round.”
Universal may hold off to announce anything until after the release of Terminator next summer, in order to see just how bankable the big guy still is in one of the roles from his prime. I will say this though, seeing Schwarzenegger as an old Conan makes a heck of a lot more sense to me than seeing him as an old killer robot. Of course the older King Conan was set up in the original film, so it would kind of suck if we didn’t end up getting a new film about the character, right? Nostalgia for the win!
We’ll have more news about The Legend of Conan as it develops.
