batman-v-superman-dawn-of-justice-has-a-new-release

One of the more interesting topics of gossip going into 2015 had revolved around a cinematic showdown between Disney/Marvel’s Captain America 3 and Warner Bros./DC’s Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice. Both films were to face head-to-head and compete for box office supremacy in sharing an initial release date May 6th, 2016. Believing in their brands, and tuning into a massive stock in interest amongst eager fans, as well as taking into consideration an already loaded summer movie schedule, both studios stayed firm to their planned release. The titans of industry were, up until recently, locked in an eternal game of “chicken”, with neither Studio wanting to budge. Some people have called it a pissing match, a duel of egos. While insiders will tell you that’s hardly the case at all. Truth be told, there is a science and business to release dates. But, for the sake of fun, watching these two studios stare each other down had left curious fans wondering how it would all play out.

Well my friends, the war is over. One studio has caved while the other stands tall pounding its chest and letting out a roar of victory.

There will be no box office showdown between Batman v Superman and Captain America 3. Warner Bros. has moved the release date for Zack Snyder‘s Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice from May 6th, 2016 to March 25th, 2016.

Marvel could have easily absorbed a loss on Cap 3, but there’s no way that WB can let BvS come up short in its opening weekend. It’s too imperative to their entire DC Cinematic Universe plan. The  success of Guardians of the Galaxy cemented the fact that Marvel is just too strong for WB to go head to head.

It’s funny how we live in a world where Batman and Superman together can’t compete with Captain America. Had someone told me that 5 or so years ago, I would have told them to go screw. I never would have believed it. What a marvelous time we live in, indeed.

Dawn of Justice‘s old release date has been taken by the Gerard Butler movie Geostorm (let’s all point and laugh). In addition, WB has laid claim to a number of release dates for unspecified movies.

Box Office Mojo has the full list. Here it is.

  • Untitled DC Film – August 5, 2016
  • Untitled DC Film – June 23, 2017
  • Untitled DC Film – November 17, 2017
  • Untitled DC Film – March 23, 2018
  • Untitled DC Film – July 27, 2018
  • Untitled WB Event Film – November 16, 2018
  • Untitled DC Film – April 5, 2019
  • Untitled DC Film – June 14, 2019
  • Untitled DC Film – April 3, 2020
  • Untitled DC Film – June 19, 2020
  • Untitled WB Event Film – November 20, 2020

This is in obvious direct correlation to Marvel’s untitled movies planned through 2019. I do not know what DC has planned, but right now it looks like they are just like a little kid licking things and claiming them as their own.

What could these films be? Justice League. Wonder Woman. Batman. Shazam. Aquaman. Justice League Dark. Green Lantern? The possibilities are endless.

As it stands now, we’re  getting a whopping 21 new comic book movie adaptations and/or superhero films combined from Marvel Studios and Warner Bros./DC, on through to 2020. Just goes to show you, comic book movies are here to stay.
