Thanos. He’s the bad guy you love to hate. He’s only appeared in two movies so far and with a combined running time of less than five minutes, but if you’re at all interested in the coalescing story arc across all the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies, you can’t talk about it much before mentioning Thanos. So you’re big, and purple, and mean, but you’ve had your @$$ handed to you twice now, once when your army was decimated on Earth and again when a ragtag group of criminals, including your own adopted daughter, robbed you of the MacGuffin you were so desperate to possess, now what do you do? Josh Brolin may know. He does, after all, play the part of Thanos.
While talking to IGN about his next comic book based project, the one based on Frank Miller’s Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, Brolin was asked about his – ahem – powerful new role in the Marvel franchise, and whether or not he knows when and where Thanos may next pop up.
“I know what one appearance is going to be for sure,” Brolin said, adding, “There’s one or two that I don’t know.”
Interesting. Might I suggest that this may confirm that Thanos will have some kind of role in Avengers: Age of Ultron? His appearance might make sense there, as we know the next two confirmed movies after that are Ant-Man and Captain America 3, and I find it somewhat unlikely that Marvel’s going to shoehorn Thanos into either of those properties. (Although, shoehorning a Thanos cameo into Ant-Man might help explain why Edgar Wright walked away…)
As for the “one or two” might Brolin be referring to Guardians of the Galaxy 2 and The Avengers 3? Those would be the logical selections for Thanos to pop up again, and everyone at this point’s assuming that Avengers 3 will essentially be the Infinity Gauntlet storyline. There are about 10 other Marvel films coming between now and 2019, and theoretically Thanos can show up in any one. Might Doctor Strange accidentally reach out to the Mad Titan? Might Thor? Perhaps there’s a Nova movie on the horizon? Time will tell.
As to the subject of just how much he’s gotten into Thanos’ head yet, Brolin says that he’s been studying the source material and considering what Thanos and Col. Kurtz, Marlon Brando‘s character from Apocalypse Now, might have in common. But any doubts the actor had about taking on the role faded away when he come out on stage at Comic Con during the Marvel panel and clowned around with Iron Man Robert Downey Jr.
“Once I got on-stage, it sort of became its own improv,” said Brolin of his appearance in San Diego. “I knew at that point, because I saw the rivalry between Robert and I, and I thought, ‘I get this. I suddenly really get it.’ So I feel like I’m more inside it than I was. It was more a display to me before that. It was more cosmetic. Now I think I’m starting to get who the guy is a little bit.”
That’s a good because by the looks of it there’s some big stuff in store for Thanos over the next couple of years.
Sin City: A Dame to Kill For comes out August 22, Avengers: Age of Ultron hits theaters May 1, 2015, and Guardians of the Galaxy 2 returns to our galaxy in July 2017. Guardians of the Galaxy is currently in theaters everywhere.
