Back in July when everybody still thought it was cute for Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson to tease his newest movies via Twitter, we read something about a new role with the tag “say the word.” He was still being coy about it and not really giving out much information, but the clues were there if you could spot them. Pretty much everybody spotted them and sites ran with whatever information they could find, which was little. We knew he would be in a new movie and we new he’d play a superhero and we knew it was a DC Comics property. With the semi-cryptic “say the word,” hint (the word being ‘Shazam’), guessing the answer to his puzzle was much easier than whatever Katee Sackoff thought she was doing in a similar situation. Now The Rock has come clean with the news: he’s in ‘Shazam.’ But in what role?
Update: More comments from Johnson have been added below, relating that he wanted to announce Shazam at Comic Con, and saying that he expects the official announcement to come soon.
Now, whether it’s a surefire ‘Shazam’ project or an appearance in a DC comic book movie, Johnson hasn’t confirmed which role he’ll be playing. He said exactly that to the Associated Press in Mexico City yesterday.
“It’s the interpretation of a character from DC Comics. It’s the story of Shazam, but I can’t say if I’m playing Shazam or Black Adam…In this case in particular, I believe we will do [the part] justice. I’m putting my heart and soul into this role.”
I hope so, because everybody else has been putting him into the role since 2007. First, director Peter Segal was on board to helm the film, but Warner Brothers saw money in mimicking ‘The Dark Knight’ and wanted a darker movie. Enter Geoff Johns and Billy Birch in 2009 to whip up a new ‘Shazam’ script that would bring everybody down because that’s how movie studios think. Here it is 2014, Johnson’s name is still attached to a flick with no real substance to it – we don’t even know who he’s playing! I don’t know about you, but I’m bored with this. The next thing I want to read about or hear is: “The cast and crew for the new ‘Shazam’ movie are heading into production!”
The rest is just more boredom. But here’s my prediction:
My trip to Comic-Con was a surprise, so I called personally to executives at New Line and Warner Bros. to see if they would like to announce Shazam there. Unfortunately, it was not time yet, but the official announcement should happen soon.
I am 100% sure that the movie will happen. We’re talking about it since 2008, when I was offered the role first. It was just a matter of finding the right script – and it finally happened now. We have a writer who understood the story and brought an amazing approach not only to Shazam, but also the power of Adam Black.”
