As rumors swirled around the Internet about Jenna Coleman leaving Doctor Who in this years Christmas special, the BBC has been pretty tight-lipped about the whole thing. Everyone dodged questions about it on the last leg of the Doctor Who World Tour fans that left fans hanging. When Peter Capaldi recently made an appearance on BBC’s The One Show, he was finally asked the question directly. Check out the video below for his answer.

When asked by the RadioTimes a BBC spokeswoman said:

It’s speculation at this time. People will have to watch the series to see if she’s coming back or not.

We want to focus on the upcoming series.

This appearance by Capladi is an interesting puff piece type interview that one would expect from a mid morning celebrity news type program, with the usual host and co-host not really knowing that much about the show, yet trying to ask questions form their cue cards. Die Hard Doctor Who fans probably cringed when Clara was called an “assistant” instead of ” the better known description as the Doctor’s companion. You can skip to the 8:15 mark if you want, but Capaldi does a delightfully masterful job of keeping things on track during the segment.

Capaldi skirts the issue, but he does it in such a stylish way that we can forgive him for it:

I’m not looking for a new assistant. I’ve read that she’ll be leaving at Christmas but I don’t even know if she’ll get to Christmas. You’ve gotta just watch and wait and see what happens.

He does go on to talk about Jenna’s performances this season saying:

What I can say is she’s absolutely fabulous. The work she’s done this season is extraordinary because she’s been called upon to do thing that I don’t think any other companion has had to do—to show a kind of emotional range—and she’s done it absolutely brilliantly.

When faced withe the guess what this sold for game, Capaldi did pretty well. His quick minded line, “I can’t remember what I paid for it.” at one point made me grin. We also saw some behind the scenes looks as Capaldi had his first reading with the cast. Perhaps we’ll get to see more of that with the new Doctor Who follow-up show Doctor Who Extra. If it makes its way to the states or at least online.

The new season premieres tomorrow night. Do you have any special viewing party planned?
