Well, it’s been at least a few weeks since we heard the latest Doctor Strange casting rumor, so it must be time to get those rumblings going again.  To remind you, over the past six months or so, Benedict Cumberbatch, Tom Hardy, Jared Leto, Jon Hamm, Joaquin Phoenix and even Johnny Depp have been rumored to be leading the cast of Marvel’s Phase 3 entry as Stephen Strange, aka Doctor Strange.  So, who is now rumored to be the current front runner for blockbuster?

According to the folks over at This is Infamous, Boardwalk Empire’s Jack Huston has entered the ring for the coveted role of the Sorcerer Supreme.

"Boardwalk Empire" Season Four New York Premiere

The movie has been rumored for quite some time but looks like it is getting closer and closer to coming to fruition.  Kevin Feige has expressed his excitement over and over again, which makes it surprising that it has taken this long to finally get off the ground.  Then again, it may have been a very smart move to test the waters with a wacky movie like Guardians of the Galaxy before committing to making a movie based on mystical powers.

Dr. Stephen Strange started as a very successful neurosurgeon that was very selfish, materialistic and, really, very narcissistic until a car accident takes away his ability to use the tools of his trade: his hands.  After wasting his vast fortune trying to find a cure for his injuries, and becoming a back alley doctor for cash, Strange seeks out The Ancient One, who he believes can heal him with magic.  Eventually, Strange learns the ancient arts that transform him from his current self into the Sorcerer Supreme, drawing his powers from different mystical entities.

The Marvel movies so far have been able to keep magic or even super powers out of the equation, choosing to explain superhuman abilities with science instead.  This will change in Avengers: Age of Ultron, as newcomers Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver are being referred to as “miracles” in the film.  While this is a long step from invoking the mystical powers of various deities, it’s also a step in the right direction and will give Marvel’s writers some help bringing Doctor Strange to life.

While director Scott Derrickson (Sinister) and writer Jon Spaihts (Prometheus, Darkest Hour) are officially on board for the release, no casting announcements have been made at this point.  Most rumors point to Marvel aiming for a July 2016 release, so those announcements should be coming fairly quickly.  Until we get those announcements, it is fun to try to picture all of the rumored frontrunners for the role, IN the role.  Of all of the rumors, Huston does make the most sense and does have the necessary ‘stache to board the role.  Really, isn’t that what’s important?
