The very spoiler-y folks at Badass Digest seem to have gotten their hands on a script for ‘Avengers: Age Of Ultron.’ It concerns a possible movie roster change of the famous superhero group. In the comics, this was something the Avengers did pretty routinely. Makes sense that they’d address it in the films. This is an exciting concept that’s bound to ruffle some feathers. And something this big wasn’t thought up all willy nilly. It’s one of those grand plans Marvel bigwig Kevin Feige spoke of awhile back. Here’s the thing – if this info stays as part of the plan, who on the team stays and who goes? I have some ideas and I’m going to speculate about them. But Badass Digest says there’s one hero who’s a lock. And it’s someone we have yet to see on screen. Let the SPOILERS fly!
Rumors is as rumors does. This one says that Captain America goes flip mode on his new friends by changing the lineup at the end of A.O.U. Badass mentions that Cap, who was introduced formally in the Avengers #4 comic, shuffles the membership by issue #16. Kind of early to be making such command decisions, but the time frame could reflect the gap between Avengers movies, yes? In this script we keep hearing about, there’s one particularly overpowered female badass that joins the team. That world-shaker is none other than Ms. Marvel. Take it away with your badass selves!
“At the end of Age of Ultron Cap will assemble a team that is a mix of familiar and new faces, leading forward into Phase Three. It’s an exciting mission statement for Marvel Studios, letting audiences know that the Avengers team is more than just the guys who were in the first film. The make-up of that team is, technically, up in the air until that scene is shot (I suspect it’s being saved for either scheduled reshoots or will be snuck into the schedule of ‘Captain America 3’, which goes before cameras early next year), but Joss Whedon’s script did indicate who would be on that team. I won’t reveal all the names – and some have changed in between drafts, by the way – but one character who has always been in this new team is Captain Marvel.”
If we do see Carol Danvers at the end of A2, it would probably be without any pomp on the circumstances of her origin. She could eventually get her own film to follow up on. Or we might not see her again until ‘Avengers 3.’ Whatever happens next, it doesn’t sound like there will be an origin story. Either way, her presence will appease half the crowd that’s been screaming for a powerhouse female character in the MCU.
So what happens to the heroes getting the heave ho? Will some die? Will they officially join S.H.I.E.L.D. and just sort of fade away into upcoming film cameos? If Cap’s changing the guard, I don’t expect him to make any sort of exit, but here’s what the directors of ‘Captain America 3,’ the Russo Brothers, told MTV in an interview:
“The great thing about the Marvel universe, just like the publishing, it’s a very vast, inter-connected universe, where characters will have their rise and fall, so to speak, and hand off to other characters. As the cinematic universe moves forward, you may start to see the cinematic universe adopt that same pattern, as the publishing has, where there’s closure with some characters and new beginnings with other characters. How those hand-offs are made is always part of the fun.”
Alluding to Captain America’s death and one of his cohorts taking up his mantle. Which I think will happen, as star Chris Evans wants to focus on directing and is only signed on for one more C.A. movie and ‘Avengers 3.’ But that’s a whole ‘nother story altogether. Just expect Bucky Barnes to take the shield though because Sebastian Stan has a nine movie contract with Marvel. You think he’s gonna be Winter Soldier the whole time doing cameos on Agents Of S.H.I.E.LD.?
Meanwhile, back at the ranch, I was about to speculate on who would leave the team, who would join, and why. Some of this ideas are obvious and true geeks have already thought of them, but here goes:
Ms. Marvel – She joins the team because with Hulk gone, the Avengers need a brute force trauma agent.
Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch – they join the team because they didn’t show up for nothing.
Hawkeye – He leaves or stays. If he leaves, it’s off to the West Coast just in case we get a West Coast Avengers series. I know, sounds ridiculous. But Marvel is crazy – they have followed the major points of comic history very closely. It wasn’t happenstance that Loki was the villain in the first movie, just as he was in their very first comic together. It’s insane, but it could work.
The Vision – done deal, duh.
Black Widow – gone. Because the way the world works, Scarlet Witch and Ms. Marvel are already overshooting their quota on female members. Sad but true. Or Scarlett Johansson gets her own movie. She does have a 6 film deal and we’ve only seen her three times.
Falcon – I don’t see him playing any part at all.
Thor – Gone. Gotta make room. Plus, I think actor Chris Helmsworth would be happy to move on. Though, I don’t see the studio replacing him with a female version of the character like the comic has done. I think Thor will just take off and rule Asgard.
Iron Man – He stays. You can’t dump Robert Downey Jr. Marvel will pay him what he wants and he will still be Iron Man. It’s all about the money.
Ant-Man – He joins the team…eventually. I don’t see it happening in ‘A2,’ but I’m largely a foolish man so I don’t know.
War Machine – Possible new member because he’s in the second installment. Because, as I said, Marvel likes to half-ass mirror the comics, and Don Cheadle could stand in for Downey Jr. should they pursue a Tony-Stark-goes-Civil-War type storyline. War Machine could be your new armored compatriot.
Doctor Strange – If so, somebody kill me. I hate this idea. Keep this man off doing his own thing, please.
And yet, no mention of the one guy I’m totally gunning for. Come on, Marvel…get with it!
I like a little give and take as much as the next person. So what do you bastards say? Ready to speculate? Who do you think is in and who do you think is out? Comment below!
