So many rumors. So… many… rumors. With Marvel’s Doctor Strange being one of the next big productions on the list (and a possible franchise replacement for the popular Iron Man), speculation on who will play the epic, magic-wielding Doctor has been rampant. Now, it seems as if some of those casting rumors were more than just rumors, for the Internet is claiming that none-other-than the three time Oscar-nominated Joaquin Phoenix is in final talks to don the garb of Stephen Strange.
As the speculation progressed, we heard about Phoenix being one name on a rather impressive list of potentials that included actors such as Benedict Cumberbatch and Tom Hardy. Then later he was spotted hanging out in comic shops and buying Doctor Strange comic books. After that, Phoenix went into official talks. Now, if sources are to be believed, he’s been offered the role and all that needs to happen is for the actor to sign on the dotted line. In other words, it’s all in Phoenix’s hands at this point. If he wants the job, he’s got it.
Personally, I’m crossing my fingers that Phoenix says yes. He’s proven time-and-again that he’s a brilliant actor and jumping into the shoes of Doctor Strange would bring credibility to the character that would sell serious amounts of tickets. It would also put the pressure on Marvel and director Scott Derrickson to bring their A-Game and produce a film that is more than just fancy special effects and silly gimmicks.
The biggest question is whether or not Phoenix would be willing to commit to what would likely be at least a three-picture deal. The actor isn’t known for taking on big-budget projects. Returning every couple of years to reprise the role of Stephen Strange might be the one thing that puts Phoenix off enough to have him turn tail and run. Hopefully that won’t be the case.
Until we hear the official word from Marvel, however, we’ll just have to wait and see what happens.
Unfamiliar with the character of Doctor Strange? Here’s a handy-dandy bio to get you up to speed (courtesy of the Marvel Wiki):
As Master of the Mystic Arts and Sorcerer Supreme, Doctor Strange is typically the world’s foremost expert on magic, but it wasn’t always that way. Earlier in his life, he was an arrogant professional surgeon, but when a car accident took his fine motor skills away from him, he became desperate and searched the globe for a cure. One was offered, not to cure his hands, but instead to cure his soul.
Doctor Strange is slotted to hit the big screen on July 8th of 2016.
