Last week, actress/comedienne/legend Joan Rivers was rushed to a New York City hospital after she stopped breathing during a neck surgery. Today, one week after being admitted to the hospital, Joan Rivers has passed away at the age of 81.
Rivers’ daughter, Melissa Rivers, announced the passing of her mother earlier today with the following statement to ABC News:
It is with great sadness that I announce the death of my mother, Joan Rivers. She passed peacefully at 1:17pm surrounded by family and close friends.
Rivers was mentored by the late, great Johnny Carson and she first appeared on his show back in 1965. Her brand of humor was abrasive and could even be a bit harsh but her view of the world was almost always on point. Her fame would eventually shift and rather than focusing on her comedy, the public was much more interested in the various plastic surgeries she underwent in the latter part of her life. We’ll of course always remember her as Dot Matrix in Space Balls.
After the announcement of her death, many stars immediately took to social media to express their condolences.
