I’ve never played the online role playing game World of Warcraft, but some people are downright obsessed with the it. One such person was the late, great Robin Williams, who once joked that he was darn near addicted to the game. Williams was a big gamer, even naming his daughter Zelda in honor of the long-running RPG series of the same name, and when Williams died quite suddenly last month, the push was on to pay tribute to the man in some form in the WoW universe. Mission: accomplished. Like a genie in a bottle, the Williams tribute in World of Warcraft has now been revealed.
The gang at Wowhead (via Kotaku) found the cameo in the latest WOW expansion Warlords of Draenor. The tribute nicely tips its hat to not just the actor/comedian, but also to one of his most famous roles. Here’s the image, and an explanation:
One Wowhead reader said they found the above genie on an island near Talador in the beta for WoW’s next expansion, Warlords of Draenor. It’s pretty much perfect. Says Wowhead: “You can summon Robin by rubbing the Ever-Burning Lamp. When first summoned, he exclaims ‘INFINITE COSMIC POWER’ and then shrinks and waves goodbye, saying ‘itty bitty living space.'”
Nice. Activision-Blizzard was petitioned almost immediately after Williams’ death via a Change.org effort to push the company to recognize and immortalize the actor in the game. As it turned out, they didn’t need that much pushing and stated rather quickly that they were, in fact, already working on it.
Making the character a genie was a nice tough, and probably more fitting for WoW than a boat-rocking disc jockey or an absentee father who cross-dresses to be his children’s nanny. The tribute is subtle too, which is nice. It will certainly bring a smile to the face of many of Williams’ fans who, like him, got lost for hours in the World of Warcraft.
Warlords of Draenor will be available in November.
