The Marvel Cinematic Universe and its cohesion with television and film has its fine line, sure. But it’s also very impressive in how it manages to represent their coexistence effectively. Whether it’s making a TV star out of Agent Coulson, who was once just relegated to cameos, or dropping Sif or Maria Hill into episodes of ‘Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.’, we’re always reminded that the worlds do collide in harmony. Well, if it ain’t broke, don’t beat it with an Infinity Stone, I always say. And because Marvel listens to me (huh??) let’s be prepared for an interesting appearance in the new season of ‘Agents.’ And by interesting, I mean retro. If you guessed Captain America, you’d be wrong. Close…but wrong.
There’s a lot happening in the 2014/2015 season, and here’s hoping they’ll tie up that beguiling story about what Coulson was writing on that freakin’ wall! For a little extra insight on what we’ll see, here’s how ABC breaks down Season 2 of AOS:
“After helping to thwart Hydra, Coulson was appointed as Director and tasked with rebuilding the agency. This won’t be an easy job to accomplish with the majority of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents either killed, secretly working for Hydra or free agents.
Agent Melinda May (Ming-Na Wen), expert pilot, martial artist and longtime friend, will continue to look after Coulson in the wake of the mysterious etchings he’s been carving into walls. What do these etchings mean, and can Coulson be trusted? Grant Ward (Brett Dalton), highly trained in combat and espionage, was found to be a Hydra mole and a traitor to S.H.I.E.L.D. and locked up away from the world and his former teammates. But this isn’t the last we’ve seen of him…
After being left to die in the middle of the ocean by Ward, Agent Leo Fitz (Iain De Caestecker), brilliant engineer, and Agent Jemma Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge), genius bio-chemist, found a way to escape their watery grave. But all did not go well for Fitz, who was left in a coma and may never regain his full cognitive functions; a devastating blow to Simmons. And computer hacker Skye (Chloe Bennet), now a full-fledged S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, discovered her origins as a 0-8-4 — an object of unknown origin – and that her parents were considered “monsters.” Could Skye have darkness lying dormant inside of her?”
Heavy stuff, I know. What’s this about Skye’s “darkness?” And is Fitz going to come out of this a badass or a vegetable? Where are we going with Melinda May’s mom in all this? And why is Agent Carter listed on Marvel.com as showing up in this series? Questions!
Marvels ‘Agents’ will start season 2 in October and fill its mid-season break with 8 episodes of the new series ‘Agent Carter’ starring Hayley Atwell. That show’s premise involves one Margaret “Peggy” Carter as an employee for the Strategic Scientific Reserve. She moonlights doing covert missions with Howard Stark, the father of billionaire adventurer Tony “Iron Man” Stark. Another familiar name set to appear is Jarvis, the senior Stark’s butler, who played manservant to the Avengers in the comics. The show is set in 1946, but Atwell has signed on to guest star as Carter in an upcoming episode entitled ‘Shadows.’ It’s anyone’s guess how they plan on pulling that off, but you can expect a flashback to the beginning days of S.H.I.E.L.D., perhaps during Hydra’s early infiltration. Here’s the official synopsis from Marvel.com
“Shadows” – Coulson and his team are now wanted fugitives with limited resources–but that’s not stopping them from keeping the world safe from powerful and unseen threats everywhere. However, with new members they hardly know, will S.H.I.E.L.D. ever be trusted again?
These “new members” could be 2 welcome additions. The first being Patton Oswalt as clones of Eric Koenig, Billy and Sam Koenig.
Eric Koenig himself was a Life Model Decoy of the original Eric K., who was an original member of Nick Fury’s ‘Howling Commandos’ in the comics. No idea if Oswalt’s character mirrors that backstory, has a new one altogether, or if the name is just used as an homage.
The second is Antoine Tripplet, played by B.J. Britt, also rumored to show up in ‘Age Of Ultron.’
The character is new to the Marvel Universe, but has a royal legacy in that his grandfather was a member the Howling Commandos. It is never made clear which member of the Howlers is his kin, but Gabriel Jones is the top choice. I’m also wondering if those two new players having Howler ties means anything or if the writers were just out of ideas.
We’re expecting a crop of cameos and guest stars this season, including George Stephanopoulos as George Stephanopoulos(?), Kyle MacLachlin as Skye’s father, Lucy Lawless as Isabelle Hartley, Brian Patrick Wade as Carl “The Absorbing Man” Creel, Reed Diamond as Daniel Whitehall, and Simon Kassianides as Sunil Bakshi, whoever that is. Cobie Smulders is expected to return as Maria Hill and Adrianne Palicki will play Barbara Morse, aka Mockingbird.
