‘Married With Children’ was a sitcom on FOX and it told the story of failed shoe salesman Al Bundy, and his family: tacky wife Peg, slutty, idiot daughter Kelly, and loser son Bud. Its dysfunctional family tag team with ‘The Simpsons’ was a perfect way to waste a prime time hour. The show ended unceremoniously in 1997 after 11 strong years, but its finish was an abrupt one. No final episode, no goodbye, nothing. I took it personally because I was a big fan. But when the “family” got together for Katey Sagal’s (Peg) induction into the Hollywood Walk Of Fame, I was wowed to see how close the old gang still is. And it didn’t surprise me to later hear news of a possible formal TV reunion.
18 years after the show called it quits, it looks like it may return in a form similar to its previous one…but this time starring David Faustino. The show presumably chronicles the ongoing saga of Bud Bundy and his own family, no doubt packaged with antics and hijinks to boot. No word yet on how much the rest of ‘Married’s’ cast will participate, but his onscreen mother Katey Sagal told E! that they’ve all been trying to work together again for years. At the time, this new venture may have been a guarded secret.
“We’ve talked about it every year, but then there are so many pieces that have to be in alignment that for some reason it never happens,” she spilled. “But we love each other. Well, we’re all working now, so it’s hard to find the time!…We’re going to do something with Dave maybe. I don’t know if it will be in character…But I don’t really know. I don’t know what that’s going to be. I don’t know if I’m allowed to speak on that at all. So I should probably stop talking about it right now!”
Ed O’Neil (Al) more than has his hands full acting like he deserves Sofia Vergara on the hit show ‘Modern Family.’ Sagal has enjoyed success on FX’s ‘Sons Of Anarchy.’ Christina Applegate (Kelly) stayed active with a couple ‘Anchorman’ movies and the upcoming ‘Vacation’ reboot. Faustino went on to do some of the most obscure work in the entertainment industry while everyone thought he’d just disappeared. I’m sure he was great as Reagan Brinkley on ‘Up All Night,’ but I’ve never heard of that show before today. But he’s apparently stayed busy, and is about to get a lot busier. If this actually gets off the ground…
Sony Pictures Television is said to be wrangling the series pitch, and until there’s a definitive confirmation and pre-production date, we’re all just cooling our heels. The original ‘Married’ was created by Michael G. Moye and Ron Leavitt. Moye is a former TV producer and writer who penned for ‘Good Times,’ ‘Diff’rent Strokes,’ and ‘The Jeffersons.’ Leavitt created other spinoffs after his success with ‘Married’ and passed away in 2008.
I think it’s a fantastic idea but falls flat if we don’t get a good amount of screen time from the other Bundy’s. How much have they changed over the years? Applegate already voiced disapproval to coming back as “slutty” Kelly, but I bet she can still play a great moron. And how about daddy Al? Could he really have just spent the last 20 years sitting on the couch with his hand in his pants, feeling sorry for himself? His character would have to come back developed somehow, but I can’t imagine what route they could take. And Peg? I seriously see her not changing one bit. She’d be perfect tipping around in those silly heels and push up bra, saying off-the-wall shit. Oh, and Jefferson and Marcy! They’d HAVE to cameo now and again, right?
But the real question is how Bud would return to the screen. He was always the smart one – did he parlay that into a life-saving success story that pulled him away from his goofus kin? Will they show up periodically asking for handouts? Or did he just collapse under the sheer weight of low expectation and a terrible home life? Maybe this dude is selling women’s shoes. Ouch, I hope not…
What I’d really like is an updated version of the old show. No laugh track, make it very ‘Arrested Development.’ But please God, no mockumentary style take, a la ‘Parks and Recreation.’ What are you expecting from this series, should it come to light? Don’t be scared – sharing is caring!
