Can we all agree that Robert Downey Jr. is one of the best things to ever come out of Hollywood? The man has some serious acting chops and inspires other actors to bring out their best game; his tragedy-turned-success story is an infamous example of how someone one can pull themselves out of the deepest depths and still come out smelling like roses; and he is a hell of a charming leading man. Marvel demonstrated their pure brilliance by grabbing the only man anyone can even see in the Iron Man suit these days and while this may take him out of the running for any other superhero, a new video game movie adaptation may have grabbed Mr. Downey for a role, giving fanboys and fangirls yet another reason to love geekdom.
Moviepilot has reported that Robert has signed on to play Leonardo da Vinci in the upcoming Assassin’s Creed movie. The story has since been taken down, so, as always, take this with a grain of salt. If the story is true, however, it may turn Creed into one of the very few successful movies based on a video game.
Video game movie adaptations are notoriously hated by gamers and critics alike, generally thanks to filmmakers that don’t quite get the game in the first place. From Super Mario Brothers to Prince of Persia, a video game adaptation generally means a box office bomb. Assassin’s Creed was already set to break this trend and if the rumor does turn out to be true, it will add legitimacy to the genre and may even kick off a whole new generation of video game movies.
Robert Downey Jr. is one of the sure fire ways to put people in seats and there is little doubt that Creed can only benefit from his involvement. I’ve always been of the opinion that da Vinci was one of the coolest artists of the renaissance, not only for his painting but for the glorious inventions he was able to think up. The Creed version of da Vinci has the artist in an important role in the struggle between the Assassins and the Templars and his inclusion in the movie may give some fans of the series a hint as to the path that director Justin Kurzel will take with the franchise. Then again, considering the director has already confirmed that the movie would take pieces of each of the games to create a completely new story, da Vinci may wind up being something completely different. Either way, there is no doubt that Downey will be awesome in the role. Hell, he’s awesome in any role. What are your thoughts on the rumor? Is this great news or did you picture someone else in the role?
