With several release dates between now and 2020 reserved, but actually not very much announced in terms of titles to those films being released, Marvel Studios has now pencilled in a name for the July 8, 2016 release date, a movie that’s been long in the works but was directly hinted at in this past spring’s hit Captain America: The Winter Soldier. That’s right, tie on your Cloak of Levitation, and shine up your Eye of Agamotto because the Sorcerer Supreme is coming to a theater near you in the Summer of ’16. The time has come for Doctor Stange!

According to Screen Daily, Strange is being prepped for a 2016 release date, with a probably start date for principal photography in May 2015. Reportedly, space has been booked on the Pinewood-Shepperton lot in England, although likely there will be some additional shooting in New York’s West Village, homebase for Strange and his Sanctum Sanctorum.

If Marvel is booking studio time and setting a release date, then they must be getting close to making some news in terms of casting the titular part. When last we heard, Joaquin Phoenix was in the final phase of negotiations to take on the role, but that remains as much rumor as verifiable fact. Sinister director Scott Derrickson is still tapped to directed with Prometheus screenwriter Jon Spaihts currently working on a re-write of the script. Christopher Young will reportedly be scoring the film.

Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige has previously said that Doctor Strange would have a big role in the company’s Phase 3 plans, which kicks off next summer with the release of Ant-Man. That was kind of confirmed when “Stephen Strange” was referenced as a threat to HYDRA in need of elimiation in The Winter Soldier. In another interesting note, there’s been some discussion that Strange will not be an origin story, which would be an unusual departure for Marvel Studios if true.

No matter what Marvel’s working on story-wise, look for Doctor Strange news to start coming fast and furiously now as there now seems to be only seven months till shooting gets underway. We’ll have more news on the project as it develops.
