kirk hands

A new cameo rumor was making the Internet rounds yesterday that involved the original series Kirk (William Shatner) and Spock (Leonard Nimoy) sharing the big screen once again. They haven’t been together on-screen in a Star Trek movie since Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. Both have had Star Trek on-screen roles since, but never together. Now both William Shatner and Star Trek 3 director and writer Roberto Orci have publicly responded to this new rumor.

Badass Digest got the rumor ball rolling claiming that a pivotal role had been written for Shatner that involved old school Kirk and Spock together on-screen.

I have learned that the script for Star Trek 3 includes a scene that reteams Shatner and Nimoy onscreen as Kirk and Spock for the first time in canon since 1991’s Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. It would be a pretty huge moment for fans of the franchise, and likely the last time we’ll ever see Shatner as James T. Kirk in official continuity.

As fun and cool as that sounds, now both Orci and Shatner have taken to the Internet to put the kibosh on this latest rumor. Orci posted a couple of messages over at in response to their post:

orci2We all know that “The Shat” is all over the Internet when it comes to social media and responding to Internet call outs. Shatner took to the Twitterverse to settle the whole matter:

Now we do have to say that Orci leaves the door open and Shatner just says he knows nothing. Perhaps now that Orci has this thought in his head we might just see something like this happen after all.

Now some have mentioned using that horrible ribbon from Star Trek: Generations  to bring Kirk into this time changed universe. I’ve always hated that whole plot device, I just couldn’t see Kirk in that setting, wouldn’t he rather be on the Bridge? I thought the entire series, on television, books, and movies always came back to the Enterprise being Kirk’s only true love.

What I think would make a lot more sense would be New Kirk (Chris Pine) and Nimoy do another mind meld where Kirk sees the old Kirk in Spock’s mind. That would make a lot more sense and be a lot easier to slip in.

What do you think?
