It’s time to read between the lines again. Ridley Scott made some recent comments about Prometheus 2 that have many Alien franchise fans scratching their heads and shaking their fists in the air. You’ll notice I didn’t say Prometheus fans, because 99% of them would rather be known as Aliens fans first. While talking with Yahoo! about his current schedule, which might just be the most hectic in Hollywood, well second most hectic, Samuel L. Jackson is in everything and must be number one when it comes to a hectic Hollywood shooting schedule. What did Ridley say that has such a large portion of Aliens franchise fans in an uproar?
First Scott laid out his schedule, currently he’s shooting The Martian, then he hopes to move on to Blade Runner II, which is dependent on Harrison Ford‘s schedule which is currently tied up with Star Wars VII and beyond.
It’s on the charts. I can’t say when that would be yet, because of [Ford’s] thing with ‘Star Wars’. It’s a sequel – it’s what happens next. It’s quite surprisingly clever.
After he gets all that done, he thinks he’ll be ready to move on to Prometheus 2.
Right now, as we speak, it’s being written. I’ve had 15 drafts evolving. I definitely want to do that again because I really enjoyed doing ‘Prometheus.’
When asked about the mixed reactions to Prometheus, Ridley discussed the Aliens franchise as a whole and the changes he plans to make going forward. What Ridley said below is what’s really got some Aliens fans going:
The beast is done. Cooked. I got lucky meeting Giger all those years ago. It’s very hard to repeat that. I just happen to be the one who forced it through because they said it’s obscene. They didn’t want to do it and I said, ‘I want to do it, it’s fantastic’. But after four, I think it wears out a little bit. There’s only so much snarling you can do. I think you’ve got to come back with something more interesting. And I think we’ve found the next step. I thought the Engineers were quite a good start.
OK, is he saying that there won’t be any Xenomorphs in Prometheus 2? What I am getting from this quote is that Ridley is tired of the space alien chasing the main characters type story, which as he puts it, “wears out a little bit.” being the main draw of the movie. Ridley is trying to transition to the next phase in the franchise. That means that we might see some Xenomorphs, but it won’t be the main focus of the movie. Much like they really weren’t the main focus of Prometheus.
If you’re still worried, don’t forget that Noomi and David are flying an Engineer ship designed to drop off those Xenomorph nurseries straight to the Engineer’s home planet. Something bad is going to happen either along the way, or when the ship lands/crashes/gets shot down that will let those monsters loose again.
Does this mean we’ll never get another Xenomorph-on-the-loose focused movie? Of course not, there will be an eventual reboot of the franchise after Ridley runs his course on Prometheus. Then we’ll get right back to what started the entire franchise, snarling spit dripping, acid blood filled Xenomorphs hunting down unwary space travelers.
So sit tight, keep your blood pressure in check, and let Ridley do his thing. He’s so busy that sooner or later he’ll pass off the Aliens franchise to another director.
