Not a week goes by without some production company releasing yet another adaptation of a popular YA novel. The latest to hit the screen (on September 19th) was the big screen incarnation of The Maze Runner. And because every YA novel seems to be part of a trilogy, The Maze Runner is, despite some lukewarm reviews, getting a couple of sequels. And guess who shall be taking on the role of a big baddie in the second flick? None other than Game of Thrones’ Littlefinger, Aidan Gillen.
The character that Gillen will be playing is a guy named Janson, AKA Rat-Man. He’s a member of an organization called WICKED (World In Catastrophe Killzone Experiment Department), a group dedicated to testing the skills of the captured teens so that only the strongest survive to help with putting the Earth back in shape.
We’ve pretty much all seen Gillen play the manipulative bastard in Game of Thrones and this seems like a role that’s right up his alley. Only now he’s exchanging the garb of a lord and merchant for that of a researcher. Let’s just hope the poor guy doesn’t get typecast as a backstabbing prick for the rest of his career…
For those that haven’t taken the time to see The Maze Runner:
It’s based on the first in a trilogy of novels by author James Dashner. It follows the tale of Thomas, a teenaged boy who awakens, sans memories, in The Glade. Surrounding him and his fellow “Gladers” is a maze filled with nasty traps. Together, they try to decipher the mystery of why they are there and then work toward figuring out a way to escape.
Check out Gillen and The Scorch Trials when they release (tentatively) next year on September 18th.
