So far, with only two episodes in the bank, Gotham is both confounding and pleasing Batman fans. The casting is pretty good, and the show looks great, but the writing is hitting us over the head with all the allusions and references to the Gotham of the “future,” the one where Batman is fighting his famous villains and they don’t work in the police department answering every question with a question (Riddler), or skulking around like a feline and calling herself “Cat” (Catwoman), or get slightly homicidal when they’re compared to Antarctic fowl (Penguin). But if you thought it odd that all of Batman’s favorite foes were in play years before there were active was odd, then get ready for a new addition to the world of Gotham. The man that will be Two-Face is coming.
According to Deadline, actor Nicholas D’Agosto has been cast as Harvey Dent, future Gotham City District Attorney, ally of Commissioner Gordon and Batman, and the super-villain Two-Face. According to the site, D’Agosto will be recurring through the first season of the show, but will have an option to be promoted to full-time regular status should the show be renewed for season 2. When Dent appears on Gotham it will be as an Assistant DA, who’s looking to clean up the crime and corruption in the titular city. He’s got his work cut out for him. If you think you recognize D’Agosto, then you might have seen him in his recurring role as Dr. Haas in Masters of Sex, or his roles in films like Final Destination 5 and Fired Up!
So if we’re casting Harvey Dent already I can only assume that the writers of Gotham are already running out of ideas, which is not good. It’s been noted in numerous articles the writers are painting themselves into a corner, suggesting that Jim Gordon was pretty ineffectual for 15 years waiting for Bruce Wayne to grow up to be Batman, not only is he having no success cleaning up Gotham City, but he’s had a hand in creating some of its most accomplished villains. Does that mean Dent’s going to look just as ineffectual? And how long now till be we get Baby Dick Grayson? Or Bane, Bruce Wayne’s school bully? Or maybe we’ll meet a transfer student from Smallville…. *Wink*Wink* Sigh.
Billy Dee Williams, Tommy Lee Jones and Aaron Eckhart have all played Harvey Dent/Two-Face on screen before.
Gotham airs Mondays on Fox.
