Fresh off his award-eligible role in “Law & Order: Civil Asset Forfeiture Unit,” Jeff Goldblum recently talked about the status of the Independence Day sequel and his part in it. It feels like it’s been a while since we heard anything about the follow-up to the nearly 20 year old alien invasion blockbuster, and maybe that’s a good thing. Still, there must be some kind of interest in seeing more ID4, and that’s why we keeping talking about it, and when you get a key player like Goldblum cornered, you’re obviously going to take the opportunity. So what of it, Goldblum? What’s the story with Independence Day Part 2: Independence Harder?
While talking to Time Magazine about a new series of GE commercials he’s appearing in (?), the topic of Independence Day 2 came up. To begin with, Goldblum confirmed that there is a part for him in the film, and that he’s had discussions with the filmmakers about it. “I had a meeting and have been talking over the last several months or year with Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin, the producer, and they’ve been cooking up and say they have a part for me in what they hope will be a plan to make another one pretty soon,” he said.
As for specifics, like when shooting on the movie might start or who else is in the cast, as it turns out, Goldblum is just as much in the dark as the general public. “When I looked into it a bit, I saw something from a year ago saying, ‘Oh, maybe some people are working on it, but maybe not Will Smith,’ but all of that always seems so nebulous until it actually happens,” he explained.
As the interviewer points out, it turns out all plans are soft until final confirmation is made. Like the rest us, Goldblum is waiting for the word. “I think you’ve put your finger on it. ‘Nebulous until actually’ is what that file is under, but yeah, they’re still talking about it and I’ve heard recent rumblings here and there about it, and ‘Oh, there’s a scripting coming in’ — maybe last weekend there was a script handed in, so it’s brewing,” he said.
Supposedly the script will focus on how the returning characters from the original film, and a bunch of new recruits come together to fight the next wave of alien invaders. Wait until those aliens find out about the MacBook Air and iOS8, they’ll be be $#!%ing brinks! Of course, since the announcement of ID4-2 Emmerich and Devlin have added a Stargate reboot to their to-do list so who knows how far they are in generating either new film. Like Goldblum, I won’t presume that this thing is happening until there’s proof.
Independence Day 2 will come out…. Some time.
