When the news broke earlier today that Green Lantern would be getting another stand alone movie in 2020, the first question that popped into my mind was, “Would this movie continue the Green Lantern story or would it be a reboot?” Now we know.
Let’s go back a bit first. The first Green Lantern movie was not a critical or fan favorite. Which was surprising in the everyone likes Ryan Reynolds. His Wade Wilson (Deadpool) in X-Men Origins: Wolverine was quickly a fan favorite. Not the mouth sewed shut monstrosity that we saw at the end, but the wise cracking sword swinging, bullet slicing mercenary that stole the screen from Hugh Jackman and others.
I remember being excited when Reynolds was announced as Green Lantern. Although the movie did make back its $200 million budget, barely made it back, it still maintains a Rotten Tomatoes score of 26%. Mainly because the story line, villain, and the shoe horned in comedy just never meshed into something fans could get behind. Here’s a video reminder of what went wrong:
While we haven’t gotten the How It Should Have Ended treatment for Green Lantern, he does pop up in this great HISHE piece:
Well, we didn’t have to wait long to find out about the reboot question. The Wall Street Journal’s Ben Fritz was on site for the Time Warner Investors Day event and tweeted this out:
Other DC movies in the works: Cyborg, a Green Lantern reboot, and new stand-alone Superman and Batman movies

Now the press release doesn’t say reboot, but perhaps Warner Bros CEO Kevin Tsujuhara said reboot in his presentation. I’m hoping that is the case and not that Fritz is just assuming that Green Lantern is a reboot. Even though the reboot idea makes the most sense overall considering the lack luster way Green Lantern was received publicly.
Reynolds is hopefully going to be busy with bringing a Deadpool sequel or co-starring in a movie with Wolverine or an X-Force movie in 2020. If the first Deadpool movie is a hit in 2016, that would at least create a scheduling issue for Reynolds slipping that green ring back on his finger.
For me, I would rather see the John Stewart version with someone like Idris Elba in the lead role. How cool would that be?
I think we’ll find out soon, either Green Lantern will be cast and show up in Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice along with all the others, or perhaps we’ll have to wait until the casting for Justice League One or Two are cast.
Who’s your pick to protect Sector 2814?
