Guillermo del Toro will return to direct Legendary Pictures’ Pacific Rim 2, the next chapter of the epic rock ’em sock ’em Mech on Kaiju epic action-adventure. While we have about a 3 year wait until del Toro’s Pac Rim 2 is released, Legendary Pictures has released a teaser poster for it on their Pacific Rim Facebook feed. It features several warships about be sucked into a vortex in the ocean. Check it out below, and hear what del Toro has to say about a possible 3rd film.
At the base of that whirlpool/vortex obviously sits the transdimensional portal that the Kaiju enter from. The first movie ended with a Jaeger erupting on the other side of the portal, supposedly destroying the invading aliens and the portal. It appears the Kaiju are capable of opening more than one portal – I mean if a rift opened up once before, why not again? Looking at this poster all I can think is “They’re gonna need a bigger boat”.
Del Toro also recently did an interview with Collider, in which he revealed the sequel will be a set-up for a 3rd and final show down:
“Some of your favorite characters come back, some others don’t because we have decided that we’re going to shoot ambitiously and say ‘Let’s hope we have three movies,’ so some characters come in at the end of the second, hoping that it will ramp up on the third one.”
There are no confirmed details on what the story of Pacific Rim 2 will be. I hope with the sequels they’ll be able to develop the story without making everything that’s not big metal things pounding on big scaly things seem so dull. And, hopefully, the Jaegers will have learned to not wait until all hope is lost before breaking out their swords.
Pacific Rim 2 is set to hit theaters on April 7th, 2017.
