Benedict_Cumberbatch_receives_Golden_Globe_nomination_for_Sherlock_performance

Marvel‘s been looking for a Master of the Mystic Arts, a Sorcerer Supreme for months. It looked like Joaquin Phoenix had the inside track on the Doctor Strange role until talks broke down, most likely over the number of additional movie appearances that Marvel contracts are famous for. Once Phoenix was out the hunt resumed and a number of names have been bandied about the Internet. Now word is working its way around the Internet Water cooler that Sherlock’s Benedict Cumberbatch is in serious talks to take on the role.

What might he look like? Thanks to an industrious Annie Wu back when the role was first announced we’ve got this mock up of a Cumberbatch/Strange:

Looks pretty good. Cumberbatch has long been a fan favorite for the role, but many didn’t think Marvel could pull it off. Why is Benedict back in the hunt? It seems that Cumberbatch’s scheduling conflicts can now be worked around after Marvel decided to move back the production start time while still in talks with Phoenix.

Once those talks broke down Marvel went back to the casting drawing board. There’s been a lot of heavy hitters names thrown around for Doctor Strange, Ryan Gosling, Jared Leto, Tom Hardy, Justin Theroux, Ethan Hawke and Keanu Reeves. Now that Cumberbatch’s scheduling conflicts are not an issue, Marvel is targeting one of their original choices. Now that Marvel wants him, and Cumberbatch is interested in the role and there aren’t any scheduling conflicts, it’s up to the various agents and money people to work out the details so Cumberbatch can sign on the dotted line.

Scott Derrickson (Sinister) is set to direct and with his past film work, many are expecting Doctor Strange to meld the Superhero genre with the Horror genre. Doctor Strange is scheduled to hit the big screen on July 8th, 2016.

What do you think of this news? Is Cumberbatch the right choice? I’d like to see him in the role, just to see him up against Robert Downey Jr. in some scenes. Sherlock vs Sherlock.
