In a massive online event today, Marvel Studios revealed its entire slate of Phase 3 films, which included previously announced films like Doctor Strange and Captain America 3, previously suspected films like Black Panther and The Inhumans, and a two part Avengers 3 called Infinity War. Also, Thor 3 is coming and it has a name, and so does Cap 3, and not only does Black Panther have a release date, but it also has face for the character, and the actor was there in person to meet his new public. To quote several people online in the last hour, “Take my money now!” Let’s take a look at Marvel’s plans post-2015.
Let’s look at the slate in chronological order starting with…
Marvel Studios head tried to trick us with something about “the Serpent Society,” but make no mistake, the third Captain America movie is indeed entitled Civil War. This will not be a civil war over secret identities, as per the comic book series of the same name, but rather Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige says it will be about the role of superheroes in the world and how the governments want registration as oversight. It’s a “Who Watches the Watchers?” kind of thing. Also, Black Panther will first appear in Civil War before going on to his own solo film.
The existence of Doctor Strange was already known, as was the fact that Scott Derrickson is directing. Marvel, however, did not announce the casting of the titular Sorcerer Supreme, and Feige said that if they had indeed cast Benedict Cumberbatch, as reported yesterday, then Marvel would have made it official today. I guess negotiations are still ongoing.
Nothing new to add it terms of casting or story details, but we will now be seeing Guardians of the Galaxy 2 a few months sooner than previously announced. It will now kick off the Summer of 2017 on May 5. Considering that Guardians is the Number 1 movie of 2014 so far, the confidence of the GOTG brand to open a summer movie season shouldn’t be surprising.
A new Thor is coming in the Summer of 2017, and it is called, again confirming a previous rumor, Ragnarok. As Feige explained to the audience, “Ragnarok means ‘The end of all things,'” So that’s ominous. No word on director or cast.
This is the big one, or rather one of them. Not only did we get the announcement of the existence of Black Panther, we got the revelation of the casting of Black Panther. Chadwick Boseman, who’s a rising star thanks to his roles in the Jackie Robinson bio-pic 42 and the James Brown bio-pic Get on Up, will be playing the role of T’Challa in Black Panther, but as previously mentioned, he will first be playing the part in Captain America: Civil War.
Boseman was on hand at the Marvel Event today with Cap 3 co-stars Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr. And bonus art, here’s what Black Panther’s might look like on film.
Another rumor confirmed. The third Avengers will follow the trend by being split into two parts called Infinity War. Part 1 will come out in May 2018, and Part 2 will come out one year later in May 2019. And yes, it will be the long-awaited showdown between Thanos and the Avengers. And just so you’re not confused (courtesy of /Film’s Twittter feed)…
Feige was asked about solo films featuring other Avengers like Black Widow and the Hulk, but for now, Feige says, they will remain supporting players in Avengers movies. Which brings us to…
Yup, Captain Marvel will be joining her fellow comic heroes on screen in the Summer of 2018. And yes, I said “her.” Carol Danvers will be Captain Marvel, but it’s unknown who yet will play Carol Danvers. Feige said that a writer and director will be found first for the film before casting begins.
Finally, 2018 will bring us The Inhumans, another long rumored project. Not much is known yet about the film but Feige implied that there may already be signs and portents about their existence in the Marvel films, “You may find out sooner than you were expecting,” he said. Is that a sneaky confirmation on the rumor that Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch, as portrayed in Avengers: Age of Ultron, are Inhumans? Time will tell.
