Are You Ready Watch 12 Monkeys End The World?

1995’s 12 Monkeys is one of the coolest science fiction flicks to ever come out of Hollywood.  Bruce Willis was perfect as James Cole, a prisoner in the future that is sent back in time in order to stop a catastrophic event perpetrated by a group that call themselves the Army of the 12 Monkeys.  Thanks to them, a virus is released that kills almost everyone on the planet and drives the survivors underground.  Brad Pitt put in one of the best performances of his career as Jeffrey Goines, a mental patient that Cole meets who has a big connection to the 12 Monkeys.  The movie is now set for the reboot treatment and will be given a new Syfy series to tell the tale.  The newest trailer has now been released and it may have some fans pretty excited for things to come.

Before we get to the trailer, it is important to note that earlier this week, the Co-EP for the series, Terry Matalas, assured fans that the series would be a “complete reimagining” of Terry Gilliam’s classic.

“We didn’t want to redo the movie and so we changed everything from the top down.”

Fair enough. If a property must be remade, it is truly important to bring something new to the table.  Alright, now let the footage roll.

Alright, let’s first address the elephant (monkey?) in the room: despite Matalas’s assertion that the series would be a complete reimagining, this looks a whole lot like the Gilliam film.  There are even some lines lifted directly from the film.  Now, that being said, the series does look fantastic.  The tone of the series looks as if it will be a bit quicker and more action packed than the film and it appears that we may actually see the beginnings of the virus outbreak.  Still not quite sure what the series will be about?  Well, Syfy has the complete synopsis all ready for you!

12 Monkeys is a drama based on the 1995 Universal Pictures film directed by Terry Gilliam.

The show follows the journey of a time traveler, Cole, from the post-apocalyptic future.  Using a dangerous and untested method of time travel, Cole arrives in the present day on a mission to locate and eradicate the source of a deadly plague that will eventually decimate 93.6% of the human race. Will Cole be able to save the fate of mankind or is mankind bound by fate? Taking place in the ravaged future of 2043 and the present day (2015), 12 Monkeys explores themes of destiny, fate, love and the possibility of second chances.

Atlas Entertainment’s Charles Roven (American Hustle, Man of Steel, The Dark Knight Trilogy) and Richard Suckle (American Hustle, The International) serve as Executive Producers. Roven produced the original film. Terry Matalas & Travis Fickett (Nikita), writers of the pilot, will serve as Co-Executive Producers with Natalie Chaidez (In Plain Sight, V, Heroes) as Executive Producer/Showrunner. Jeffrey Reiner (Friday Night Lights) directed and served as Executive Producer on the pilot.

Whether you are a fan of the original film or not, this one deserves a shot and it wouldn’t hurt to get your DVR ready so you can witness this version of the end of the world.

Are you excited for the new series?  Which scenes are you hoping they recreate from the original movie?
