DC continues its effort to dominate the Television Landscape when it comes to superheros by throwing yet another super powered series into the mix of Arrow, Gotham, Flash, and Constantine. The title character of Supergirl (Kara Danvers), and her sister were revealed last week and drew some heated discussion from fans. Now there’s sure to be more fuel added to the already raging Supergirl fan angst as more casting details about four additional Supergirl series regulars Cat Grant, James Olsen, Winslow ‘Wynn’ Schott and Hank Henshaw hit the Internet. Just who the hell are they and how do they fit in?Here’s the official Casting Call List:
CAT GRANT | The project is eyeing females in their 40s, open ethnicity, to play the founder of CatCo, a media conglomerate that Cat built from the ground up. Kara (Supergirl’s mild-mannered alter ego) will work as a personal assistant to Cat, who is described as “J.Lo by way of Anna Wintour.”
JAMES OLSEN | In his late 20s/early 30s, open ethnicity, James is a smart, worldly and (duh) attractive photographer for CatCo. Though an alpha male, his salt-of-the-earth nature elicits a huge ol’ crush from Kara.
WINSLOW ‘WYNN’ SCHOTT | This twentysomething tech whiz/Comic-Con stalwart toils for CatCo as a programmer, unaware of his own (toying?) potential. Unware of her secret, he carries a torch for Kara, whom he lives next door to.
HANK HENSHAW | As an upstart CIA agent, Hank grew obsessed with intergalactic intel. Now in his 40s and lording over the DEO (Department of Extra-Normal Operations), he is on high alert when Supergirl reveals herself, worried that her otherworldly abilities pose a threat to humankind.
Let’s start at the top with Cat Grant. In the comics Grant is a gossip reporter and has had a few run ins with Supergirl with the one above being the funniest. I’ve got to say that as soon as I read Grant’s casting description I immediately thought of The Devil Wears Prada. Will Cat Grant be that troublesome boss for Kara? Will Kara have to resort to using her superpowers to keep the boss happy?
James Olsen. Yes they are playing the Jimmy Olsen card.Perhaps this is supposed to be the way Olsen worked his way into the industry and then made the jump to the Daily Planet. I guess the mousey Olsen wouldn’t fly with producers though. They describe him as the Alpha Male. I’m not liking where they are going with this.
Winslow Schott will be Supergirl’s neighbor and co-worker and as those of you comic book readers know became Toyman in the comics. Hopefully we’ll get to see the gradual transformation of this love-sick boy next door into the seriously messed up super villain he eventually becomes.
Hank Henshaw is added to the mix. This time as the man in charge of the DEO. In the comics Hank was transformed into the Cyborg Superman you see above. Perhaps his dealings with the DEO will lead him down a similar path.
Yes, there are a lot of disturbing details in this latest casting call, Jimmy Olsen as an Alpha-male, Kara working for Cat, but with the current track record of producer Greg Berlanti (Arrow, Flash) I’m willing to give it a chance. Together with Ali Adler of No Ordinary Family, the pair are writing the pilot episode.
Will you be giving this series a look-see?
