When the trailer for Captain America: The First Avenger came out, some enterprising video fan set it to the theme song from Team America: World Police, and it worked. Beautifully. There’s something about the Captain America movies that seem to make it infinitely remixable, and so its been done again with this new video that turns the sequel Captain America: The Winter Soldier into a product from another time. There was a lot of talk during the film’s production and release that The Winter Soldier was akin to political thrillers of the 1970s, but how does the Marvel sequel look as a cheesy action movie from the 1980s? Your answer is below.
Courtesy of YouTube user ChiefBrodyRules, the popular entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been turned into Cannon Films revenge-based action thriller with all the stilted dialogue and practical effects work done on the cheap that you’d expect from hits like Missing in Action 2: The Beginning and Ninja III: The Domination. Interesting bit of trivia, that horrible 1990 Captain America movie was originally developed at Cannon but was later distributed by 21st Century Films.

ChiefBrodyRules did a pretty good job with this, even if some of the RoboCop and Die Hard clips stuck out like a sore thumb. They weren’t Cannon movies, but they were quintessential 80s so I guess we can forgive them. (Another interesting note is that RoboCop villain Ronny Cox was also in the 1990 Captain America movie as the U.S. President who’s the victim of a conspiracy perpetrated by the Red Skull and the military industrial complex. Long story.) It was also a nice touch putting in that clip of Chris Evans from Scott Pilgrim Vs The World with the “Listen hard, and listen fast buck-o…” line. Even though you kind of ask yourself why Cap now has facial hair and a put-upon tough guy voice, it still works intercut with the Redford on the phone clip (not sure where that’s from).
What did you Bastards think of the 80s upgrade (downgrade?) of The Winter Soldier?
