Word around the Internet has Oscar winner Jared Leto being considered for key role in David Ayer’s Suicide Squad that could quite possibly be the part of the Joker according to an individual close to the project over at Warner Bros. Leto is no stranger to the internet casting rumourville, he was previously  one of the frontrunners to take on the role of Marvel’s Doctor Strange, which eventually went to Benedict Cumberbatch. Warner Bros. and Leto’s representation did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

With Tom Hardy, Will Smith and Margot Robbie in varies stages of discussions to star in the movie, and Jesse Eisenberg expected to reprise his role as Superman’s earthly adversary Lex Luthor, the cast is looking rather haphazardly put together. However, Ayer’s track record with ensemble casts has been pretty good, with the exception of the terribly cliche-ridden Schwarzenegger starring vehicle Sabotage, but with the further talent of Charles Roven producing the film, it appears to be in good hands.

According to another insider it was previously thought that Ryan Gosling (huh? …really?) was asked to play the part of the Joker but didn’t want to commit to a multi-picture deal which is believed to be the reason Joaquin Phoenix skipped out on the Doctor Strange role.

Leto recently received a lot of critical acclaim – bagging himself an Oscar – for his exceptional performance in Dallas Buyers Club, but is he really Joker material? Hollywood have been keen to cast him in a follow-up project, but he seems to be holding out for the right role. Being a method actor and all, he could either ace the part of the Joker, or simply over-do it and ham it up. Also, let’s not forget that it is still a touchy subject with Heath Ledgers awesome and ominous take of the maniacal antagonist in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight. Furthermore,  the tragic passing of Ledger just after filming wrapped has left a bad taste when there have been talks of re-casting for the part (Ledger went on to win a posthumous Oscar for his amazing take on the Joker and also received unanimous praise from fans and critics alike). Some say it is too soon for another Joker, however the same was said about Batman when that was announced.

Yet, something important to point out is that, although the Joker’s fate in The Dark Knight was left on a rather ambiguous note, it has been said that Nolan’s Batman trilogy is not expected to have any connection to WB’s shared DC Movie Universe so it wouldn’t technically be a re-casting.

Ayer is currently rewriting and streamlining a script originally penned by Justin Mark in which the Joker did not appear, but the some times reliable Latino Review recently reported that Cara Delevingne is being sought to play the part of Harley Quinn. We all know that when Harley Quinn appears, the Joker is usually within close proximity. Delevingne has already tweeted a picture of Harley Quinn several weeks before speculation first started.

So what do you think fellow Bastards? Do you think Leto would make for a good Joker? He certainly has the acting chops! Also, let’s not forget that previous bashing of actors being case as superhero’s has left some of us eating our own words. Sound off in the comment section below with your views.
