Marvel has officially announced the casting of German actor Daniel Bruhl for an unspecified role in Captain America: Civil War. The actor – who is probably best known for his ambiguously endearing-but-nasty role as Frederick Zoller in Quentin Tarantino’s Inglorious Basterds – joins a cast that already boasts three superheroes. Captain America: Civil War has an impressive line-up, including Chris Evans’ Cap. America, Robert Downey Jr’s Iron Man, newcomer Chadwick Boseman’s Black Panther and Sebastian Stan’s Winter Soldier. Unfortunately there is still no word on Frank Grillo’s involvement in the film as Crossbones.
Bruhl has already acted alongside Thor’s Chris Helsmworth in Ron Howards Rush last year.
There has been no announcement on which character Brühl will be playing although there has been plenty of speculation. Deadline’s Mike Fleming has claimed Brühl will be playing a villainous character, which doesn’t necessarily narrow it down to any specific part, but hasn’t stopped punters on the Internet from guessing. Interestingly, due to Brühl’s nationality, numerous sources are tapping him to portray the most obvious character from Captain America’s gallery of rogues: Baron Zemo, a purple-masked über-fascist mad scientist (who could ultimately be the secret puppet-master behind all the mayhem in the movie?!). Other roles could include the part of Dr Faustaus the nutty – but actually really cool – psychiatrist, Nitro, Speedball, or even MODOK (which is the least unlikely of all of the suggestions for the obvious physical reasons…). However, with Marvel unveiling that Brühl would be a villainous role who could possibly be showing up in other movies including Dr Strange, our money is on Baron Zemo.
Kevin Feige – Marvel’s head honcho – and Civil War producer had this to say about Brühl’s casting announcement:
“With Daniel’s ability to deliver intense, nuanced performances, we knew we had found yet another great actor to share the screen with some of our biggest heroes.”
Brühl is no stranger to winning awards having earned a Golden Globe, SAG, BAFTA and Critics’ Choice nominations for his role as Niki Lauda in director Ron Howard‘s “Rush.” Also, as previously mentioned, Bruhl has also worked with esteemed directors such as Quentin Tarantino, Paul Greengrass, Anton Corbijn, and Michael Winterbottom.
Joe and Anthony Russo are directing the new “Captain America” movie, which hits theaters on May 6, 2016.
