Before I begin, can we stop? I mean, when the first teaser trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens happens, it will happen. Imagine the fun and joy of going into the movie theater one weekend and then – BOOM! – there it is. I know, I know, we live in the era where there are trailers for the trailer in order to feed the steady diet of hype we all need, but there’s precious little value in surprise anymore. Having said that – Surprise! – there are more rumors this weekend concerning that first teaser for Episode VII, one that suggests you won’t have to wait as long as the release of The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies to get your first look at that galaxy far, far away as envisioned by J.J. Abrams.
A report on /Film is suggesting that by this time next weekend, a great many of you may have seen the new teaser. According to their sources, “a limited number” of movie theaters during the Thanksgiving weekend will have a “preview” of The Force Awakens teaser. Confirmation or denial from either Disney or Lucasfilm was not forthcoming. At the same time though, a Reddit post suggestions that there will be 100 theaters across the United States that will exclusively show the Star Wars teaser in front of every movie through the whole weekend, in exchange for some extra promotion of Big Hero 6 and early showings for the animated film.
There is some overlap in the two rumors, particularly the limited nature of the trailer’s premiere and the deadline of Thanksgiving weekend. The Reddit post does however say that the teaser will be 90 seconds when most reports say, to the contrary, that the teaser is pegged at 60. The good money should bet on some kind of Star Wars teaser to make the rounds before the weekend is out, and if it isn’t playing at a theater near you, then I’m sure it will be pirated and disseminated online in no time flat. (Not that Nerd Bastards condones pirating. Pay to play, folks.)
If it seems like Disney may be going overboard with the games they’re playing in order to keep this trailer under wraps, can I offer four words: Avengers: Age of Ultron. No less than 24 hours after the news broke that the trailer for Marvel Studios’ next film would premiere on the following week’s episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., the trailer was leaked, forcing Marvel to get a good copy of the trailer online fast. Marvel, of course, is another subsidiary of Disney, so there’s no way that the Magic Kingdom is going to get burned twice in the same month. Given all that, it’s almost surprising that the shell game of when and how the Star Wars teaser is being released has been kept up this long and it hasn’t already been leaked.
So the only question no is: what will the trailer contain? I wouldn’t bet on anything particularly insightful or explosive seeing as how the film only wrapped principal photography a couple of weeks ago, and considering that there’s still a whole year between now and the release of the film, there’s still a lot of time and headlines to fill in regards to Star Wars rumor and speculation. The teaser will likely just give us a taste of what to expect with no real insight into the plot or the overall story arc. Still, at 60 seconds, the teaser will have 1,440 frames ready and waiting for dissect endlessly. So it’s going to be a fun weekend for the nerdy nation out there.
We’ll have more news as it develops. Star Wars: The Force Awakens is in theaters December 18, 2015.
