We are pretty much rendered speechless here at NerdBastards, …but the trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens is finally here (…and with no lens flare might we add!)! The Sci-Fi tent-pole has been years in the making, since Disney acquired George Lucas‘ production company Lucasfilm (…and thank god for that after the mediocre CGI-ridden affair of parts I, II and III). Directed by JJ Abrams, the man behind the TV show Lost, and the recent Star Trek movies, the film features an all-star cast including the original cast members Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, and Mark Hamill. Some old favourites have also returned, with the likes of Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew and Kenny Baker in his iconic role as the diminutively bleeping droid R2-D2. The film also features a whole load of newcomers including John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis (working with his motion capture company), Domhnall Gleeson, Max von Sydow, Lupita Nyong’o, and Gwendoline Christie.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens will be an original story and will not be directly based on any of the material in the Star Wars Expanded Universe such as the various novels and graphic novels. It will take place some time after Return of the Jedi (decades later in fact), where the story of Luke Skywalker, Han Solo and Princess Leia continues. They will be joined by a host of new characters including John Boyega (who is first to appear in the teaser trailer), Adam Driver and Oscar Isaac
No more waiting, the trailer is here – good god almighty it’s here at last. If you’re a Star Wars fan, it will bring a tear to your eye – then moments later you’ll either continue to relish in its splendor or you’ll start picking it apart and hop right on back on the hate wagon cursing director J.J. Abrams. Whatever you’re feelings – you know them to be true – for now, sit back and take it all in. Watch the trailer below.
Well the trailer looks like a Star Wars movie and sounds like a Star Wars movie, but we have very important questions to ask regarding the trailer, especially this one… Who is this little droid guy?
Seriously though, now that we have watched and had time to digest the 88-second teaser, it’s time for a little dissection. The trailer starts off with the ominously sounding:
“There has been an awakening – have you felt it?”
Who was that doing the voiceover? …Max Van Sydow maybe? Nope, we can confirm that the voice you hear is none other than Andy Serkis (Source: Yahoo). We’ve never really heard a voice like that come out of Serkis before. However, as we all know, Serkis is a man who physically vanishes into roles, and by the sounds of things, he’s going to be doing something very different again in the movie. Although Serkis not having much screen time, he will have a pivotal role in the film.
What we do know for certain is that it is definitely not Benedict Cumberbatch, …definitely not… If you listen closely, it appears that there are actually two voices in the teaser.
It’s also interesting that the first person we see in the trailer is John Boyega fully clad in Stormtrooper gear. Is there is any significance to that fact that the first person we see after the awakens line is John Boyega? He looks confused and scared. Did he suddenly find out he has Jedi like powers after some trauma or big fire fight? Luke might not be the only one awakening in this trilogy. This could make for an interesting dynamic – first stormtrooper to have Jedi powers. This could conflict with the empire hunting down force wielders.
This is just a superb shot of a few X-Wing Fighters taking formation over the water, not much else to say about this shot. Just Brilliant.
Is that Oscar Isaac flying an X-Wing? We think it is.
Looks like Director JJ Abrams has decided to update the famous neon lightsaber with this beast, which looks more like a sword – adding a horizontal bar between the handle and the sci-fi plasma blade. However more pertinently, who is the villainous looking figure darting off into the woods. Could this be Adam Driver or maybe even Domhnall Gleeson?
The Millenium Falcon shot is an immensely stunning shot, but who is flying it? Han Solo? We know that he injured his leg on set. Our guess is that he hurt it whilst onboard the Falcon.
One thing is for sure, JJ Abrams has purposely chosen to keep the original cast members absent from the teaser (…there are already people complaining about this online, …it’s a 90 second teaser for crying out loud). We thing it looks fantastic, and it is only a small teaser of what’s to come. The shot of the Falcon and John Williams’ original score at the end is a nice touch. Let us know what you think fellow nerdsters. Does it need more lens flare? Have you extrapolated a rough cut of the film in your head, and decided you are gonna hate it/like it/love it?
Star Wars: The Force Awakens will hit theaters on December 18th, 2015.
