Casting a superhero is a perilous thing. If the actor you hire is unexpected, or unknown, or not immediately obvious to the average fan, then the nerd rage created online will sometimes blot out the sun. That might be particularly dangerous for Supergirl considering that she gets her power from Earth’s yellow sun, but regardless, CBS is persevering with the casting of their new superhero in her eponymous upcoming series for the network. As these things go, a new name has risen to the stack of 8x10s in the latest report on the casting process for Supergirl, and if you’re a regular viewer of shows on The CW (where Supergirl’s heroic colleagues Arrow and The Flash currently reside on TV), then you might be familiar with this new actress who’s reportedly in mind to play the Girl of Steel.
In a new report courtesy of TheWrap, it appears that Australian actress Claire Holt is in the running to play Kara Danvers, AKA: Kara Zor-El, AKA: Supergirl. Genre fans may recognize Holt from her role as Rebekah, one of the first family of bloosuckers on The Vampire Diaries and its spin-off The Originals, and other fans may have longer memories and remember Holt playing a mermaid alongside her Originals co-star Phoebe Tonkin in the Australian series H2O. The point is that after all that, playing an alien may not be out of line for Holt, nor would it be beyond her skills as an actress.
It’s worth keeping in mind that this is not an official report from the production, and Holt, like all blonde Hollywood actresses in their mid-20s, is one of a number of women being looked at for the part. The series will follow Supergirl as she decides to stop hiding and start being a hero a la her Kryptonian cousin Superman, but its unknown what, if any role, that the Man of Steel will have. Rumor has it that the series creators Greg Berlanti and Ali Adler will be rearranging Supergirl’s origin somewhat, but chances are good that they’ll still be looking for someone strong yet vulnerable, able to handle herself in an action sequence as well as have a sense of humor, and Holt’s fans know she can check all those boxes easily.
As for availability, Holt is not longer a regular on The Originals, although she does pop up infrequently. Her next project is the NBC series Aquarius, which is a crime series set before the murders committed by Charles Manson and his followers in 1969. The air date for Aquarius is unknown, but it looks like Holt isn’t one of the main cast anyway and her part is more recurring. In which case, Holt should be very much available for a part in Supergirl. The Supergirl pilot will likely shoot sometime in late winter or early spring so that it’s ready to air in the fall.
We’ll update you on the casting and production process on Supergirl as more news becomes available. In the meantime, let us know what you think of the potential casting of Claire Holt, would she be a good Supergirl, or would you beg to differ? Sound off below.
