We pause in the midst of the 24 hour break between portions of The Flash/Arrow crossover to talk spoilers about the immediate future of the Emerald Archer of Starling City. (Incidentally, you can read the Nerd Bastards review of “Flash Vs Arrow” here if you so choose.) Now Arrow and his cohorts have a lot of problems on their plate at the moment, from the return of Malcolm Merlyn, to the death of Black Canary, to the pending arrival of Ra’s al Ghul, but it seems that the Arrow writers room has one more potentially deadly twist up their sleeve for Oliver Queen and his rascally crew of do-gooders; a blast from the past that will by no means be a welcome surprise for anyone on Team Arrow. Potential spoilers below.
As per MTV, none other than Slade Wilson, AKA: Deathstroke, will be making a return engagement on the upcoming 14th episode of Arrow’s third season. Spartacus star Manu Bennett will once again put on the eye-patch and bad attitude to play Slade, who was last seen in an A.R.G.U.S. prison on Lian Yu after his super soldier riot in Starling was upended by Arrow, Canary, Arsenal, and some League of Assassins fighters. Slade promised that he’d be back, and to borrow a phrase from another DC Comics villain, it appears he’s going to be a man of his word.
MTV has no insight as to the circumstances for Slade’s return. Might he be framed as a suspect in Canary’s murder? That would imply he got loose from Lian Yu, got back to Starling, and Amanda Waller and A.R.G.U.S. decided to keep Oliver and company in the dark about it. Plausible, but if true why did he stop at Sara? He hates everyone on Team Arrow, so did he get all raged out after putting several arrows in Canary? Theories also include the possibility that Oliver may have a Silence of the Lambs style tête-à-têtes with Slade, perhaps comparing notes on the League or some other bad guy they have in common. Or, and I hesitate to suggest this, perhaps there’s a Slade connection in Oliver’s Hong Kong flashback, a likely but hopefully wrong, hypothesis given the lameness of the Hong Kong flashbacks so far this season.
Slade’s return will cap a busy line-up of several episodes for Arrow, which begins tonight with part two of the Flash/Arrow crossover that sees the heroes face off against Captain Boomerang. In next week’s fall finale, Ra’s al Ghul issues an ultimatum for Arrow to deliver Sara’s killer lest the people of Starling City start suffering for his apparent inaction. When Arrow reconvenes in January, look for a trilogy of episodes that lead up to Laurel Lance putting on the leather and mask of Black Canary, just in time for the return of her sister’s former shipwreck mate Slade. Stay tuned, and if you can’t Nerd Bastards will recap it all. Same Arrow time; same Arrow channel.
Arrow airs Wednesdays at 8 pm EST on The CW.
