As promised in yesterday’s teaser, today is Judgement Day…. and by that I mean the day we judge our first look at the latest installment in the Terminator franchise.
Yes, the first full trailer for Terminator Genisys hit the ‘net today and as far as first looks go, it doesn’t look half bad. We have a new Sarah Conner (Emilia Clarke,) a new Kyle Reese (Jai Courtney,) and even a new John Conner (Jason Clarke,) sporting more facial scars than any actor in the role ever! More mean it’s good, right?
The real good news is that the Terminator remains the same. Yes, Arnold Schwarzenegger returning as the (a) T-800 is not news, we’ve known for a while now that he’ll be back as the aged cyborg from the future that raises this new timeline version of Sarah Conner since the history has been officially reset in this apparent soft reboot. At first look, the trailer eases some of the concerns many of us had about this redux of the franchise.
The two and a half minute look at next summer’s reboot/reset to James Cameron’s 1984 sci-fi classic hits the marks fans of the series are most likely looking for. The key lines are spoken (“I’ll be back” and “come with me if you want to live“,) it has explosions and gratuitous gun fire. Heck, we even get to see new Old Arnie blow away young CGI Arnie moments after arriving (naked) in 1984 and therefor completely devaluing the VHS copy of the first movie I still have.
Couple that with a new T-1000 (played by Byung-hun Lee,) a handful of call backs to previous installments (good news everyone, they are totally going to stop Judgement Day this time, for real, fifth time is the charm,) and a few “fresh” spins on a couple of iconic scenes. At the very least this movie looks like it could be a real nice love letter to long standing fans of the franchise.
Will it stand on it’s own and launch a new trilogy like Paramount wants? I guess we’ll have to wait till next summer to see.
Terminator Genisys is set to hit theaters July 1st, 2015.
