‘Earth to Echo’s’ David Green Directing ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2’ – Beebop & Rocksteady Confirmed!
It has been announced that Jonathan Liebsman – although sounding enthused about the prospect of future entries in the series in the past – will not be returning to direct the second installment of the recently rebooted franchise Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Now, Variety has reported that Earth to Echo helmer David Green will now taking over the franchise to direct 2016s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2. Green is know to most for his family-friendly, found-footage hit film Earth to Echo (…best described as a mix between E.T. and The Goonies), which was filmed on a mere budget of $13 million going on to gross an impressive $45 million worldwide for Relativity Media (that’s a nice return right there!).
The reboot, which was released this summer and starred Megan Fox, Will Arnett, William Fichtner, Alan Ritchson, Jeremy Howard, Pete Plozek, Noel Fisher, Danny Woodburn, Jonny Knoxville and Tony Shalhoub, went on to gross more that $477 million at the worldwide box office and a sequel was green-lit pretty much after the first week of it’s release. Although the Blu-ray/Dvd market is becoming far less lucrative and losing out to streaming services these days, no doubt there will be a healthy addition of dollar to add to the films cumulative total due to the December 16 release date – just in time for Santa.
Critically the film received a hammering, however the film seemed to be a hit with fans, and the word of mouth was OK. So it pretty much done its job, as a lot of people were going in expecting the worst due to Liebesman directing and Michael Bay producing. Bringing in David Green seems like a great opportunity to improve on the faults of the first film, as he is a talented director and done a great job with Earth to Echo. The question remains though… are we going to see the two fan-favorites villainous mutants Bebop (Warthog) and Rocksteady (Rhino) from the much beloved 80s cartoon series? …what about a certain vigilante who hides behind a hockey mask? …things are looking promising as it stands.
ComingSoon.net spoke with Megan Fox – star of the movie April O’Neil – just before the release of the first film in the Summer and she revealed a blink-or-you’ll-miss Easter Egg cameo which teases Bebop and Rocksteady for the sequel. Here is the video in case you missed it:
There has been no information on the story of the sequel, but it has now been confirmed that we will be seeing Bebop and Rocksteady, as well as Casey Jones. The was announced by Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes Producing partners Brad Fuller and Andrew form. Here is what they had to say about the new characters we will be seeing in the sequel:
“We can say that Bebop and Rocksteady are in the film, and Casey Jones is a character that we love and we’re trying to fit him in as well”
This is great news for all us fans of the 80s cartoon! Here is the early concept art that was used during the development of the first movie:
I don’t know about you guys… but I’m thinking that the villainous mutant imbeciles are looking pretty “radical” man… Also coming back are Megan Fox, Will Arnett, and Shredder (although we don’t know if it will be the same actor playing him).
So are you as excited for the second installment as you were for the first? Has the prospect of a live-action Bebop and Rocksteady bolstered your expectations? …how about the addition of the not-so-stable Casey Jones?
Michael Bay is producing the big screen sequel through his Platinum Dunes and it already has a release date for June 3, 2016.
