When Edgar Wright left Marvel‘s Ant-Man, the prospect of keeping the production on schedule seemed improbable; what, with the film looking for another director to fill Wright’s shoes, compounded by the rumors that changes had been made to the original script (apparently the straw that broke the camels back and finalised Wright’s decision to “part ways” with Marvel). It just seemed like everything that could go wrong, did go wrong. But, low and behold, Peyton Reed jumped on board and re-wrote the script along with the help of Paul Rudd, and things started moved along rather nicely. Thusly, production has now wrapped on the filming, and it is headed into post-production with its original summer 2015 release date still intact.
So here is what we have so far on the diminutive but powerful superhero. Paul Rudd will star as master thief (not a con artist as was initially stated) Scott Lang alongside Michael Douglas as Hank Pym, the scientific genius behind the discovery of the miraculous Pym Particles. The film is going to explore Scott Lang and Michael Douglas’s introduction into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with the two characters – who are two generations of the same superhero identity Ant-Man – having to work together to fight against a common foe.
Other cast members include Evangeline Lilly as Pym‘s daughter, Hope Van Dyne, Corey Stall (who will play the villainous Darren Cross a.k.a. Yellowjacket), Michael Peña, Judy Greer (as Lang’s ex-wife), Bobby Cannavale and Martin Donovan (…that’s a pretty meaty cast right there). With so little known about the synopsis, it was hard to work out what actor would be playing what character.
Now that Marvel have now provided an updated synopsis (posted by Stitch Kingdom), the cast members have now been assigned to their character names. Subsequently a few surprises have been thrown into the mix, as the role of one of the main antagonists, Castillo, will not be portrayed by Peña as previously thought – with Spanish actor Jordi Mollà (Bad Boys 2, Riddick) portraying the character as we have now learned.
The updated synopsis gives us more details on who will be playing what character in the film, revealing that Ant-Man will feature Cannavale as Paxton, Peña as Luis, Greer as Maggie, Tip “T.I.” Harris as Dave, David Dastmalchian as Kurt and Wood Harris as Gale. As we already knew due to Greer spilling the beans in a previous interview; she will be playing Lang’s ex-wife, however, none of the other characters names stick out as major characters from the comics, so chances are that they are introducing new characters in the movie adaptation.
Mollà is the only previously unannounced cast member, though filming has already wrapped, so he’s not a new addition to the cast per se, only to us unsuspecting minions. Going back to the rumor-mill, apparently Castillo is a Latin American dictator in a similar vein to Fidel Castro; Marvel‘s version of Castro (…so, a slightly campier South American dictator then). Furthermore, Castillo will be the main villain in the 1960s portion of the movie, this is the same portion of the movie that will feature Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell), so we can expect some S.H.E.I.L.D. action, some Hank Pym action, and some Cold War politics.
