The internet is an interesting beast. While a movie or franchise can spend millions on marketing a legitimately good movie, trolls across the planet can have it all tumble down with a few harsh keystrokes. On the other end of the spectrum, the internet has also helped get many projects off the ground that may have never even initiated lift off had it not been for the online campaigns that insisted the projects come to fruition, e.g. Veronica Mars and Deadpool. Well, it looks like the net may have done it again, this time in the form of William T. Riker aka Jonathon Frakes. Thanks, in part, to an online campaign, it appears that Frakes has reached out to Paramount Pictures in an effort to helm the next voyage to the final frontier.
As you probably recall, Robert Orci stepped down from the director’s chair for the upcoming Star Trek 3, which will continue the rebooted adventures of James T. Kirk and Co., a while back and the studio has been looking for a replacement ever since. Fans of Trek, or Trekkers, if you prefer that, immediately took to social media to begin circulating #BringInRiker in an attempt to get the studio to consider Jonathon Frakes for Orci’s replacement. Luckily, Komo News caught up with the Star Trek: The Next Generation alum for his reaction to the campaign and it appears Frakes is all in.
“Hashtag, BringInRiker! I’m all over it. I’m all over it.”
Turns out that Frakes even confirmed that he, through his agent, has reached out to Paramount after Frakes spoke with Trek 3 Producer J.J. Abrams. It’s been about 12 years since Frakes has lived in the world of Trek but that doesn’t seem to dampen his hopes for directorial duties in the revitalized franchise.
“I would love that job. I say, unabashedly, I’d be great at it and would love to do it.”
Alright, Riker, I love the composure but tell us what you really think.
“I’m trying to keep the lid on how excited I am about the possibility, knowing it’s such a long shot. But there’s nothing I would like better.”
While it may have been over a decade since he put on a Starfleet uniform, don’t believe for a moment that Jonathon has just been sitting around twiddling his thumbs! While he may have stepped out of the spotlight in front of the camera a bit, his directorial efforts can be seen throughout many aspects of geek culture, including directing gigs with Roswell, Dollhouse, Castle, and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. to name just a few. Still, it is likely that Frakes could carve out some time to take control of the U.S.S. Enterprise if Paramount should so wish and, really, why wouldn’t they?
Frakes directed several episodes of Star Trek: TNG and even directed a few episodes of the spinoffs Deep Space Nine and Voyager. The biggest mark on his resume, however, remains to be his direction of one of the best Trek movies to date: Star Trek: First Contact. The movie was a hit both with critics and audiences and is considered by many to be one of the best of the entire franchise (it’s tough to beat Wrath of Khan and Voyage Home!), and definitely the best film that featured the TNG crew.
The interesting thing about this “development” is that with a newly skewed timeline, Kirk and the crew can go pretty much anywhere and there has been quite a push by fans to pit Kirk against the Borg to see just how he would do. While I believe it is unlikely this is the direction the movie will go, if Frakes is included, the chances that The Borg will make an appearance will become all but fact online. Reality may be a different story but Trekkers will Trek.
How would you like to see Riker drop the USS Titan to rejoin the Enterprise? Are you one of the many that would like to see The Borg in the next film?
